Announcing Two New HCL Grandmasters

19. Dezember 2019 Posted by Timothy Clark

Some people shine above others, and it’s easy to see what they’ve done and been doing for years and years. Those people come to our attention time and time again throughout the year, and it’s always a pleasure to see them “rising above” regularly. We take these interactions and store them away for future reference.

These people get honoured by us as being extra-special Masters, and we like to call them HCL Grandmasters, currently having 7 of them;

 • Gabriella Davis

 • Theo Heselmans

 • Julian Robichaux

 • Roberto Mazzoni

 • Daniel Nashed

 • Richard Moy

 • Paul Withers

Paul has just retired his term as a Grandmaster by joining us here at HCL. That’s the only hard rule we have in the Masters program: You cannot be an employee of HCL.

This year we are incredibly thrilled to be honouring two new HCL Grandmasters.

Please allow me to introduce to the HCL Grandmaster:

Mitsuru Katoh

Mitsuru Katoh

Bill Malchisky

Bill Malchisky

We’ll let Mitsuru and Bill explain in their own words what being an HCL Grandmaster means to them.

Mitsuru Katoh

“The status of HCL Grandmaster allows me to help the community more, interoperating inside and outside Japan, which leads to the entire community developing. That’s very important to me and HCL.

In the current situation where Japanese HCL Masters look quiet and isolated among other region’s HCL Masters, despite the large market and local user-community activities. Probably because of the language barriers and cultural differences. To overcome this situation and show their presence more globally, I promise I will dedicate myself to lead them to engage more in the global community.

Bill Malchisky

“I started with Notes in 1993 and appreciated the LISP-based Formula language. From there, I developed Notes DBs and learned to be an admin, leading developers on large projects. After 26 years it still feels incredible to be part of this amazing community while finding a way to contribute steadily. We are all so fortunate to be part of something greater than any one of us, and that of which continues to endure.

Notes and Domino allowed me to merge my other technology passion: Linux. Combining both, created a path to where I find myself here today — an HCL Grandmaster. I want to thank all those with whom I have interfaced over the years. It means a lot to me to receive this honor.

What’s next? I will keep working on the non-mobile template design project, allowing us to improve the overall user experience within Domino.

Mentoring new community members is something I like to do when my schedule gives me the opportunity.

Finally, continuing to train administrators on how to be more efficient with Linux when running the HCL Digital Solutions stack will certainly remain a theme.

Mitsuru and Bill will be taking on their HCL Grandmaster titles immediately, so please join us in congratulating them for their outstanding achievements.

To Mitsuru, Bill, our existing Grandmasters and our HCL Masters,

“Thanks for all you’ve done and all you do.”

From all of us at HCL.

Moving Your Mail from SCN/Verse: What You Need to Know

19. Dezember 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

We recently hosted a well-attended webcast focusing on in-depth how to move your mail from Smart Cloud Notes/Verse to your Domino server of choice (on-premises or in a managed cloud environment). In this session, we shared technical guidance on how to move both hosted and service-only mail users. Representatives of our new HCL Managed Service Providers joined us for an interactive Q&A. Here are the questions — and answers. You can watch the replay here.

Q: If we don’t want to move back to on-premise Domino mail solution, what is our option to remain in the cloud?

A: HCL has negotiated with several Cloud Hosting Providers globally to provide cloud hosting for Domino mail, applications, Sametime and Connections services. Find those Cloud Hosting Providers here.

Q: What about hosted customers migrating from SCN to another mail service? Will this be covered, or what is there some approach in this case?

A: This webcast focused on migration to on-premises Domino. HCL is not planning to provide tools to customers who wish to migrate to another mail service. Furthermore, customers who are migrating from SCN to another mail service will need to work with a third party to migrate their mail.

Q: What happens if a customer also has Connections? Is there a similar process in place for migrating to on-premises? Will there be the same session for Connections migration?

A:  For on-premises migration, Connections has a set of open public APIs. If you choose one of our Cloud Hosting Partners, listed above, they can assist with the migration. Also, migration scripts are created that obtain the source data — more information to be provided in a future webinar on HCL Connections Cloud migrations.

Q: What about encrypted mail?

A: For hybrid, replication will also include encrypted mail, the user will still be able to decrypt it with his/her notes ID. However, for service only, users should decrypt mail before migration or replication on-premises, as the “Super Delegate” ID will not be able to decrypt encrypted mail.

Q: For service, only accounts, will the unread marks be replicated?

A: They are replicated, as unread marks, but will not appear for the “Super Delegate” user.

Q: To confirm, for service only accounts, the replication is JUST with client Notes. Does it mean that I cannot use a local Domino server to do this?

A: Yes, via a workstation service, only replication is possible that has a Notes client installed.

Q: For SCN service, only accounts is it possible to obtain a list of groups with email addresses and members of the groups?

A: Yes, service only customers are provided with an extract containing public groups. It can be possible by opening a ticket with HCL Software Support.

Q: How do you create the replica stubs on the on-prem server? Doing it one by one manually is not feasible. Will HCL provide a tool?

A: Script version is available. The replicate DB tool can help with this process. The tool will be available for download by customers.

Q: Is it possible to do server to server migration with SCN service only organization. Is it correct that HCL will NOT provide organization certification to create an on-premises server to be able to replicate server to SmartCloud Notes servers?

A: HCL does not distribute certificates from the cloud environment. Rather, SCN Hybrid customers will have copies of their licenses and SCN service; only customers must create new ones, and they cannot be cross-certified in the cloud.

Q: Does the staging server/migration superuser id need to be cross-certified? If no, how does the on-premises get access? When must you move the data to the on-premises server?

A: The Super Delegate account used for service-only migration is certified the same way as any other user, so no cross-certification is needed to access SmartCloud Notes. To replicate the data to on-premises mail servers, if the particular ID is in use, then it must be cross-certified with an on-premises organization or organization unit certifier so that it can authenticate with the on-premises mail servers. Above all, for hybrid accounts, the SCN servers and the on-prem servers typically have a common org certifier, so no cross-certification is needed there.

Q: For service only migration, we can’t decommission users with connections licences. So how can we route the mails from other SCN to our new on-premises mail server?

A: The Connections environment will route mail to wherever the SCN smart host or MX record for the domain(s) tells it. During the migration, you set up the SCN smart host property on the domain(s) to point at the new mail environment. However, mail for the users routes to wherever the smart host indicates, removing the SCN subscriptions for them. Once all SCN users migrate, you update the MX record to point to your on-premises environment so that all emails will route there directly.

Q: For service-only users, will the LDIF list include the size of mail files? If not, how do we obtain mail sizes for all users?

A: The LDIF file does not contain mail file size information. However, the “Super Delegate” account (or any other account with access to the mail files) can obtain information about the mail files through the administrator client or programmatically, such as with the SmartCloud Notes Mail File Analysis Reporting tool.

Q: Can a customer request the total volume that the customer uses?

A: You can open a ticket with HCL Software Support to get this information or download the SmartCloud Notes Mail File Analysis Reporting tool and run it as needed to gather mail file information.

Q: Last time I checked only Notes Client IDs of active SCN users were allowed NRPC access into SCN (i.e. no IDs of Domino on-premises servers even if added to the mail files ACL), so replicating multiple mail files out of SCN onto a local Domino mail server wasn’t possible. Has that restriction been removed?

A: Authenticated on-premises server to SmartCloud Notes server access, never restricted for hybrid accounts; for example, free-time lookup between on-premises users and SCN users necessitated such access. For service-only accounts, access to SCN mail servers limits to Notes client workstations. To obtain mail file access, the on-premises server name(s) (for hybrid accounts) or delegate name(s) (for service-only accounts) must add to all mail file ACL’s, either directly or via a group. The organization’s administrators can do it. A migration guidance document will be made available for download addressing this topic.

Q: You mentioned ACL Update Utility. Where do you get that?

A: That is available in the SCN Admin console in HCL Connections Cloud; navigate to SmartCloud Notes administration panel, users then link to batch request.

Q: How is it possible to remove the subscription of a user? Is this option greyed out for our users?

A: To address this, open a ticket with HCL software support.

Q: Will mobile users need to reconfigure their clients?

A: Yes, mobile devices will be required to reconfigure. MDM solutions can help with the burden on users of client reconfiguration. Please check with your preferred MDM service provider.

HCL DOMINO VOLT

Q: Will Domino Volt be available for customers with Messaging license as well?

A: Yes, Domino Volt will be available as an Add-on for customers with both Complete Collaboration and Messaging Licenses.

Q: Domino Volt is what was known as LEAP on Domino?

A: Domino Volt was the project formally named Sandstone. It is based on LEAP and combines HCL’s best low-code and application development platform capabilities into a single offering.

Q: Does HCL Volt cost extra?

A: The pricing model for Domino Volt will be available when the offering is available in 1H-2020.

Q: Do HCL Masters have access to Volt today? How do I get it?

A: Domino Volt will be in closed beta by early 2020 for the HCL Masters, and HCL will be emailing them very soon.

Q: I’m confused. What’s the difference between Volt and LEAP?

A: Domino Volt is based on Leap and combines HCL’s best low-code and application development platform capabilities into a single offering. HCL LEAP is a standalone product that runs on WebSphere and DB2.

Q: Is HCL Domino Volt a replacement of Notes workflow?

A: Domino Volt is a superb platform for building new applications with a simple workflow. However, in our roadmap for v12, we intend to add a graphical workflow experience to the Domino platform. We will be looking at the functionality of Lotus Workflow as one use case.

Q: We have been told multiple times that LEAP on domino will be entitled within the domino license. Has that changed?

A: As you know, any forward-looking statements about any roadmap are subject to change. While the pricing of HCL Domino Volt will be released with the product in 1HG-2020, it will be very competitively priced, i.e., incremental to the cost of Domino.

Q: Is there any training material available for Volt?

A: Training and other reference materials will be made available when the product is released.

Q: Can you use Volt to update the interface for an existing legacy Domino database?

A: Domino Volt is for creating new applications. These could be new applications that integrate existing Domino data. However, Volt is not designed for updating or modernizing existing Domino applications

Q: Will Volt eventually replace Designer?

A: While they share the same Domino application platform, Designer is for the professional mid-code developer that build traditional Notes apps; Volt for the IT and Business Professional.

Q: Is there an upgrade path from LEAP to Volt? Will LEAP continue to get enhancements?

A: While there are no announced plans, we expect there will be an upgrade path from HCL LEAP to HCL Domino Volt in the future. In the meantime, HCL LEAP will continue to be enhanced.

Q: What about the Domino Volt license model?

A: While the details will be announced in the 1H-2020 when the offering is available, the license model is based on a per-user metric. We want to encourage customers to build applications, so there is no per App or Flow metric, unlike some low-code competitors.

Q: Any ERP integration? Or Connectors for MuleSoft?

A: HCL Domino Volt supports access to SharePoint and any REST or SOAP-based APIs, including those from SAP. However, we plan to add support for other integration solutions such as Dell Boomi and Mulesoft.

Q: Are Volt apps browser only? Can you get to it in Notes?

A: Correct, they are web-based apps. However, we will be working to enable them to work within HCL Nomad. There are no plans to add support for the Notes client.

Q: How can we register for the beta of Domino Volt?

A: There will be both a closed and open beta of Domino Volt. The closed beta will be open to HCL Masters only by the end of 2020. Details about the Open Beta will follow.

Q: Is Volt a direct competitor to one of the low code leaders, Outsystems, for example?

A: Yes, HCL Domino Volt is a low-code application platform. With this solution, existing customers will not need to make a major investment in a separate platform for their development needs for situational apps, workflows and core systems such as Outsystems.

Q: Is what being announced available right now (i.e., Domino Volt)?

A: Domino Volt will be in closed beta by EOY for the HCL Masters, and available for Domino v10 and v11 in H1-2020.

#9vor9: Zwei Kappen, der Sinn von HomeOffice, CO2, DSGVO und Newsletter, das Känguru und Beethoven

18. Dezember 2019 Posted by Stefan Pfeiffer

Recent Launches and a Look to the Future

18. Dezember 2019 Posted by Richard Jefts

We in Digital Solutions marketing are new to HCL. And we have a lot to do. The recent logo and branding re-imagining and the launch that we broadcast live from Tokyo is the beginning of a new era.

From a marketing perspective, we wanted to signal a change, put a flag in the ground to say, “Forget what you knew about these products; it’s time to look forward.” And after only a few weeks, we delivered an entirely new brand with new logos and creative under HCL Digital Solutions. We leaned heavily into a new color pallet, and completely redesigned all product logos. It was a chance, not one often given to marketers, to remake something that is already well-known and revered.

Our lead designer on the project was Liam McCormick, and I think he describes the design system best when he tells us, ”We went in search of something in HCL’s history that we could build upon, and what we found was what we considered the design DNA in the original HCL logo — it is shear angle of 24.24 degrees. We took that angle and built a grid system, and (take or leave a few hundred iterations) the new logo family was born from this original structure which can always be traced back to the mother brand of HCL.” And trust me, we could not have had better talent working on this redesign (Liam also helped design the Cisco WebEx and Vodafone logos).

But that wasn’t all we needed to do. We needed to capitalize on the momentum started with the launch of HCL Domino v10 to the rest of the portfolio. The first out of the gate on October 7, 2019, was HCL Digital Experience 9.5, a proven digital experience management platform and the very first product release for the newly acquired products. The new release provided many significant business and technical benefits, including unsurpassed standardization and flexibility, accelerated time-to-market, liberated experience delivery, and a lower total cost of ownership. And hundreds of clients and valuable business partners joined us in-person in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Milan to celebrate the launch.

Then, just a mere five months after the acquisition the major moment had arrived — on December 4th, 2019, HCL announced the general availability (GA) for HCL Domino v11, HCL Sametime v11, and HCL Connections v6.5. It was a milestone moment for the business, and I want to give a round of applause to the development teams that made it happen, many of which didn’t even have access to the code until post-acquisition in July. They worked tirelessly to reinvent the products and deliver on our commitments to our customers and business partners around the world. But it was the excitement that surrounded the launch that made me burst with joy, and our willingness to do something different that led to unforeseen impact.

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” —Coco Chanel

Too often teams throw around words like “different” or “amazing,” but not acknowledging what we were able to accomplish with this truly “different” type of launch would be a misstep on my part as a leader. We knew we couldn’t go to a market like IBM — we aren’t that type of company, and frankly, it was time for a change. So, I tasked my team with thinking outside of the box for this launch.

And think outside of the box they did. They came to me with the idea of running a “Netflix-style” launch in which we broadcast the keynotes “Live from Tokyo” and then deliver 35+ pieces of new content ranging from thought leadership pieces to technical deep dives all at once in a “binge-able” format. I was dubious of course, but if there ever was a time to try it — now was that time.

After months of planning, we all got onto planes and flew to Tokyo for our big day. On December 4, 2019, at 9 AM ET (11 PM locally) we went live to the globe for the announcement of HCL Domino v11 and HCL Connections 6.5. And the impact was immediate: Thousands upon thousands of customers and partners tuned in live all over the world, and over 50+ business partners held concurrent viewing parties to celebrate in 20+ countries. The world map looked like a lit-up Christmas tree!

And it wasn’t just the marketing team that delivered impact in such a short timeframe. The product management and development teams made significant technical advancements for these products. We announced:

HCL Domino v11 builds on our mission: Apps that run your business.

  • Domino apps go mobile: HCL Nomad makes your existing apps available on Apple iPhone and iPad, Android and Chrome OS tablets with minimal effort
  • Domino apps get low-code development: HCL Domino Volt provides a new low-code development paradigm to build new Domino apps 60-70% faster and makes it easy to develop powerful new secure applications without any specialized skills rapidly
  • Domino apps integrate and synchronize: HCL Domino v11 is the most open version of the platform yet, with active directory synching to simplify integration with Microsoft Office 365 and enable enterprises to more fully leverage Domino with other tools and applications across their business

HCL Connections 6.5 has powerful new features to drive adoption and builds a foundation for future releases:

  • Bring your community with you. Connections Sidebar, an always-on dashboard connects your users to Connections from anywhere in your IT environment
  • Grow your communities faster with Connections Touchpoint, an onboarding wizard that connects new employees to the communities and content they need
  • Do more with Kudos Activities Plus — rapid, agile project management built for every employee

HCL Sametime v11 delivers secure conversations across every device:

  • Sametime has a new, intuitive user experience that works the way your users do
  • Built with the latest tech — now supported on Docker with the Sametime proxy running on Tomcat
  • Lower TCO than ever, with a simplified architecture and easier administration

Suffice it to say, this launch was one for the record books, but it is only the springboard with which we will start a new decade. And if you were to ask me what I felt like this moment meant for us, I’d say it’s providing the foundation for real innovation on the platform. Which brings me to where are we going.

Where We’re Going
Our transition to HCL has meant moving not just a suite of products but also people and teams. If there’s one question that the leadership team gets asked the most by our customers and partners, it’s, “Are you going to invest in the products?”
It’s a straightforward question, and there’s a straightforward answer to it: Yes. I, for one, am incredibly excited and humbled by the amount being invested into the teams developing these products, the marketing and sales engine that drive them, and into the teams solely dedicated to pushing the bounds of what’s possible on our platforms. With that, here are a few of the essential ways we are investing — deeply — in our teams and technology:

  • We are hiring hundreds upon hundreds of new developers around the world dedicated to HCL Domino, Sametime, Connections, and Digital Experience
  • We are substantially increasing our global marketing investment for brand building, awareness, and lead generation for our portfolio
  • We are focusing on innovation and the “art of the possible” by naming Jason Gary, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for HCL Digital Solutions, to lead R&D and push the bounds of what these products can do
  • And finally, we are further investing in our people like the Domino & Sametime product management team

At HCL, our motto is “Relationship Beyond the Contract.” And we mean it. My commitment to you is that we will listen to you more and be bolder in our plans. We don’t have the luxury or the crutch of working for a software behemoth anymore, but we also don’t have the red tape to stop us from trying new things. Our marketing will be different — I assure you.
But more than anything, know that this is only the beginning, and I am so excited about where we are headed. It’s time for all of us to usher in a new decade at a new company for these legendary products.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year,

HCL Domino: Software for the Next Decade and Beyond

18. Dezember 2019 Posted by Andy Bossley

It’s not often in one’s career that you get tapped to take over marketing for a legendary portfolio of products. A portfolio with a history so astounding that even just one of its products, HCL Domino, single-handedly invented some of the essential IT technologies still used today. You see, HCL Domino was a NoSQL database before NoSQL was ubiquitous. It was a Rapid Application Development (RAD) platform before RAD was even a thing, and it was and still is adored and used by millions of people globally.

True to anything built to last, HCL Domino certainly experienced its fair share of ups-and-downs over the years. However, it’s still as essential as ever even after just celebrating its 30th launch anniversary earlier this month.

Domino’s Origin Story

1989 was a great year. It was a time of political upheaval, the Brandenburg Gate finally opened paving the way for German reunification, it was time for the arts, Tim Burton’s Batman premiered, and George Michael’s Faith won Album of the Year at the Grammy’s. It was a time for world-changing technology to take center stage.

Lotus Notes Release 1 Gold Build compiled on November 27, 1989. While the launch itself wasn’t until a few days later December 7, it was the birthday for Domino and Notes. But that was just the beginning.

After 6 short years, and immense success, Lotus Development Corporation, the original development company for Lotus Notes, was acquired by IBM for USD 3.5 billion in what IBM’s largest acquisition in its history would be. And this transformative software would transform the tech giant. With the close of the acquisition in 1995, Lotus Development became a new business unit at IBM. It was the very start of the IBM Software Group. That’s right — the acquisition of Lotus was the spark that made IBM a software-focused business, a precursor to the business unit that would create IBM Watson and IBM Cloud.

But as with most large companies, IBM’s priorities shifted, product updates stalled, and the once vibrant community so aptly called “Team Yellow” left on its own in many ways. It came to a head in October 2017 when HCL Technologies announced an IP partnership with IBM Collaboration Solutions to take on development for Domino to deliver the first product update users would have seen in years. On October 10, 2018 Domino v10 released. To say it reinvigorated the platform would be an understatement. People around the world rolled out the yellow carpets to celebrate this monumental moment. And the success was noticed. On December 7, 2018, 29 years to the day after Lotus Notes Release 1 was compiled, HCL Technologies announced an intent to purchase Domino (and SametimeConnectionsDigital Experience) and several other valuable, yet underserved products. The groundwork and path to a new decade were taking shape.

Where We Are Today

On July 1, 2019, the acquisition closed, and these legendary products found new life at HCL Software. But starting at a new company has its starts and stops. We had to build a new website, set up core systems, look back at our pricing and licensing models, consider technical debt in the products, and take a hard look at where we wanted to take the products in the future. It was a lot — but the HCL teams are ready to tackle every challenge. We are going to reinvigorate the Domino brand yet again. And, as we hope you realize, this is — still — only the beginning. We are happy to be on this journey with you. Read about our recent Live from Tokyo event and see just how we are building momentum.

To the next decade and beyond,

Andy Bossley

Warum Homeoffice und Heimarbeit? Klimaschutz, Gleichberechtigung, verlorene Lebenszeit auf den Straßen …

17. Dezember 2019 Posted by Stefan Pfeiffer

16. Dezember 2019 Posted by Lela Meiners

Was ist Domino Volt (Leap)?
