How We Are Building a Notes Mobile Application for iOS

16. Oktober 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

On October 15, 2019, we hosted a popular HCL Domino-focused webcast hosted by Gabriella Davis from Turtle Partnership and Andrew Manby from HCL. The plan was to bring you up-to-date with the work we have completed on the discussions template for iOS mobile as well as how we got here, what is coming next, how you can get involved. It also includes our hopes for additions to Domino Designer that will allow us to map mobile gestures and behavior to Notes applications. There were hundreds of participants asking a lot of questions. We provide the answers to those questions here (sorted by topics, in bold).

You can watch the replay here, and find out more about the Template Experience project here.

Project Scope

Q: Once you completed discussion and team room template, will you continue to enhance other templates?

A: Yes, at this time currently limited to discussion and Team room template features. However, it is the starting point for the Template project that Gab was describing. Once this template is completed and shipped, we will then look at the other templates (based on customer feedback) we want to modernize.

Beta

Q: Can we get the Nomad on the iPhone now? When is it expected to eGA?

A: Yes, you can! Sign up for our iPhone Nomad beta here. By the way, this URL is right for the beta for Android tablet too. We expect Nomad for iPhone will eGA by EOY 2019.

Cross-platform

Q: Having used Nomad, will you be adding Workspace like the standard client to make accessing new templates easier?

A: Yes, we are planning on providing the Workspace as an option for Nomad. Stay tuned.

Q: Do you intend for this prototype template to work for Nomad on other mobile platforms?

A: Yes, once it’s ready for distribution, it will load a frameset appropriate to the device for example, from an iPad or Android tablet to an Apple iPhone or Android-based phone.

Q: What about Nomad WebAssembly and the Notes desktop? Will those be supported platforms too?

A: That is the ultimate goal, the template will present the best way possible independent of the Nomad client being used (or Notes).

Delivery

Q: This looks great. What more has to be done before it will be shipped? How often will you have updates available?

A: There is more work to be done before its ready to ship the new template that works for Nomad on iPhone. For example, we are adding translations for our supported languages, more bug fixes, performance tweaks, etc. Once we have something ready, we intend to ship updates every quarter like the Domino AppDev Pack and VOP. The work of optimizing templates to work on Nomad WebAssembly and the Notes desktop will come, however, there is no timeline for that work yet. Stay tuned. We are focusing on updating templates on Nomad on mobile devices for now.

Designer

Q: We saw new template functionality introduced in the demo, including a new set of icons, will they be available in Designer in the future?

A: Thanks to the community’s feedback, we are extending Designer to add functionality to make creating more contemporary mobile apps more accessible. Stay tuned for timing.

Functionality

Q: Why there are two top menus?

A: The Top menu, is the Nomad toolbar, the second is the application action bar.

Q: Is the middle column showing the value only from 1 View Column or combined Info? Can we make a part of text Bold too?

A: The Nomad client view columns have the same design features as the Notes views, different text stylings within a single column in view are not currently possible.

Q: The users can copy paste a link into a notes doc or attach it there as normal?

A: The same copy/paste functionality for doc links is available on Nomad iPhone as on the Notes client; however, we have not chosen in this template to map that to action yet. That is something that can be customized, for instance.

Q: It will be possible to combine data from linked documents in a single view? Like adding text from the lookup-ed document?

A: It is still a Notes view with the same design capabilities as today, so not a relationship join within a view.

Q: In my opinion, create a lookup option for a text field in the view, should be very simple to add.

A: Notes has never been able to support this type of view join functionality.

Q: Also, default scrolling horizontally is not a preferred UI option.

A: This is understood. In a future release of the template/Nomad, horizontal scrolling will be disabled. Thank you.

Q: And keep vertical space, top UI should hide when not using.

A: We agree. You will see the Toolbar hidden in future releases for an application like this. We are also looking at ways to redesign the tab bar, which currently takes too much space. Thanks for the comment.

Q: Is there also a view, that shows the main topics/questions, including all responses in a hierarchical fashion?

A: The underlying data is still in a response hierarchy, within the mobile client, it is not displayed in a hierarchy, as we found it created too much space on the smaller real estate. You can see in the “more comments” view that we show documents in a hierarchy but chose not to in the primary views to maximize space on the screen. That could easily be changed in your application if required.

Q: In a discussion forum, you often want to quickly find all topics, that are either new or that have new responses. What would be the best way to find such discussion threads?

A: Great question. In the traditional Notes client, I would suggest using the date flat view, where you can see everything added, new topic, or response etc. In the mobile client, you could use tracking to track subjects you are interested in for some time. Lots of thought going into this area for the future. The Filter and Tracking features are helpful in this area. We’d love your feedback on these.

Q: Will there be a way to handle multi-document actions?

A: Currently, Nomad does not support a view selection column so we cannot select multiple documents in the way we do in Notes. We are discussing alternative ways to approach that.

Q: If we can get an update on a long (> 10 years) existing discussion database… that would be great!

A: We agree!

Futures

Q: As a developer, I’d like a configurable template so I could have a great looking mobile approval form on an iPhone. Any plans to add a Nomad template for this type of solution, please?

A: It’s a great idea and an excellent use case of Nomad on the phone. Before we commit, we want to collect the community’s input on the next target template. To help us, please complete this survey.

Update: Strategy and Release of Nomad 1.0.4 for Apple iPad

4. Oktober 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

I am delighted to bring you an essential update on the Digital Solutions strategy for HCL Nomad, the client interface to Domino applications.
First, we are shipping HCL Nomad 1.0.4 for the Apple iPad available from the Apple App Store today.

  • New name, same great product – HCL Nomad. While the Domino Mobile Apps product, officially rebranded to HCL Nomad, the mission and capabilities remain the same. As a result, run your existing Domino apps online or offline without any additional investment. Furthermore, if you were testing the Nomad on iPad via Apple TestFlight previously, you would be notified by email with the link to download the GA version on the Apple Store.
  • Where am I? Nomad knows. The release includes some cool new features such as a new LotusScript interface for iOS and Android, built-in GPS and gyroscope capabilities. For instance, once V11 ships, your Domino apps can capture the user’s exact LAT and LONG information. The possibilities for retail, asset management, audit/inspection and travel-based applications are endless.
  • Personal Mail File Access. Yes, users by default can now access their private mail file using HCL Nomad. Hence, administrators should refer to the following link for MDM options for mail and other settings: Managing HCL Nomad via an MDM provider.
  • What else is new in Nomad 1.0.4 and 1.0.3? Here’s a brief synopsis of what we think is useful in case you missed it.
  • Configuration of Nomad is now possible to avoid DNS, a necessary setting for some VPN solutions.
  • We have added Notes Rich Text Selection. Double-tap a word to select text.
  • Added Notes Rich Text Copy/Paste
  • @Command FileOpenDatabase temporary flag now works with “Recent Applications”, only when the applications were closed previously
  • @Platform[Specific] returns additional entries for iOS: model type (“iPad” or “iPhone”), apple model identifier
  • Native OS Style number fields will now display a number keyboard by default
  • Fixed Native OS style multi-input time fields
  • Managing your Nomad rollout and deployment. Now with the MarvelClient from panagenda, it’s even easier setup, manage, and customize your enterprise’s use of Notes on the desktop and Nomad on mobile devices. Therefore, for more information and an FAQ about the MarvelClient and HCL Nomad, click here.
  • Better still, replay the panagenda webinar that took place October 16  to learn what MarvelClient can do.
  • Better support for Mobile Iron MDM via Application Config. Starting with version 1.0.4, HCL Nomad on an iOS device supports managed configuration via most common Mobile Device Management (MDM) providers. However, all MDM providers are slightly different in how they implement managed configurations for applications. To learn more, please click here.

Second, calling all Android tablet and iPhone users. Finally, we have Nomad available for beta testing on Android 8.1 and iPhone available. Please sign up to participate in both betas here.

Third, the Nomad Web Assembly work is proceeding well. Some of you saw the first demo at the recent Factory Tour in Chelmsford, MA. Above all, the goal of this Nomad offering is to enable Domino apps to run natively on a web browser without installing a Notes or ICAA desktop client. In addition, for the companies I’ve spoken with, the “zero footprints” approach greatly reduces complexity. Most noteworthy, it saves time and money — a real game-changer. The timeline for a beta is 1H-2020.

Fourth, HCL Nomad and Google. Based on Google’s strategy, we’ve already demonstrated the Nomad for Android beta running ChromeOS as a native application. Furthermore, once the Nomad Web Assembly work is complete, you will able to run those apps without an install on the Chrome browser on your ChromeOS device natively. Therefore, if you want to try the Android beta, please subscribe to the beta here.

Enhancement requests? As always, we want to hear from you. Please submit your ideas as usual in the Domino ideas portal.
Thank you for your continued support of the HCL Nomad initiative.Andrew Manby / Andrew Davis

Domino App Dev: The Low-Code and Pro-Code Future

23. September 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

We recently hosted a lively and informative webcast that covered the new updates coming later this year for Domino application development. Andrew Manby and Marty Lechleider took attendees through the specifics of the upcoming App Dev Pack release, and a preview of what’s coming in future versions. On the low-code front, Marty gave an update on plans for bringing HCL LEAP into Domino (Project Sandstone) and how it will enable IT and business users to build new apps easily. You can watch the replay here.

There were a lot of great questions asked, and we provide those, and the answers, here.

AppDev Pack

Q: The AppDev pack v1.0.2 contains a feature in “preview” mode. What does “preview” mean?
A:
It means that the feature will work but should not be used in production. The feature might change slightly before being defined as production-ready.

LEAP on Domino Service Integration

Q: Is it possible to integrate LEAP with external services?  Including lookups for names on a database other than the Domino directory?
A:  Yes, LEAP has a generalized way to connect to any REST service to do lookups. However, please note that full support may not be in the initial LEAP on Domino (Project Sandstone) release but will follow shortly in a subsequent release.

Q: Are LEAP apps exposed as services to other non-LEAP applications?
A: Yes, this is the way LEAP works today.  A developer can access LEAP applications data via this API.  The API will honor any access rights you have set on the data:  However, please note, that full support may not be in the initial Project Sandstone release but will follow shortly in a subsequent release.

Q: It would be cool if we could use Domino data “as a service” like Marty did with the LEAP apps as a service.
A: Yes, we agree. The team is looking into this and should be able to add this at some point.

Q: Can we “look up” the manager for a particular request from existing customized NSF?
A:  We will add the ability to look up data from Domino source in Project Sandstone at some point.

Q: Can drop-down choices be populated directly from a backend ODBC? Oracle, DB2, etc.?
A: LEAP supports REST for data integration and not ODBC. If the backend is exposed as a REST endpoint, then LEAP should be able to get the data and use it to populate the drop-down.

Mobile

Q: Does LEAP support responsive web settings?  Can apps be mobile-friendly?
A: Yes, LEAP has page settings which allow you to specify responsive web-behavior. Page widths can be dynamic; breakpoints can be set to collapse to a single column or carousel mode and rules can be set to show/hide elements of the page based on width.

Q: If I want a LEAP app work on both a desktop and a smartphone, do I need to design two separate “forms”?
A: No. The responsive web settings will take care of this so that a single app will render appropriately on any device.

Q: Will Project Sandstone apps, if used on mobile devices, use local storage, or will they require to be always online?
A:
LEAP today does not store any data locally or support disconnected use.  We are looking at ways to leverage Domino for offline use on mobile devices.  As a workaround one could use Domino Designer to add Forms/Views to a LEAP generated NSF to support mobile offline use.

Schedule

Q: Do you have an anticipated (approximate) ship date for LEAP for Domino (Project Sandstone) yet?
A: It is planned to be shipped in beta in the V11 timeframe, more details to be released when we launch Domino V11.

Q: Will it be part of the V11 beta?
A: No, Project Sandstone will be a separate beta.

Q: When will the Project Sandstone beta happen?  How will I be able to enroll?
A: More details to be released soon when we launch Domino V11.

LEAP Sandbox

Q: Where is the sandbox? How can I access the sandbox?
A: You can access the sandbox here.

Q: I tried making service calls to different external APIs in the LEAP Sandbox, and they failed. Can you help?
A: The LEAP Sandbox requires that certificates be set up for each service endpoint and for the APIs to be whitelisted by the LEAP server admin.

LEAP Capabilities

Q: What is the roadmap for printing in LEAP?
A: LEAP has a print view which can be used to print or print to PDF the form and data.  We plan to improve this print view over time.  LEAP also has the ability to fill PDF templates and store them as part of the submission record.  These capabilities will not be in the initial Project Sandstone release and will follow shortly.

Q: Can a LEAP app contain an array of entries inside an app, like “photos taken on-site”?
A: Yes. To do this in LEAP you would add a table with fields for the photo. At run time the user could then add any number of photos into the table.

Q: Can we create our own templates?
A: Yes, you can create your own templates.  LEAP has the ability to export apps with or without data to a file. This file can then be easily imported into a user’s LEAP workspace.

Q: Will LEAP on Domino have a visual workflow editor?
A: Not initially. We have started looking at how we can simplify workflow in LEAP and include a visual approach for building workflows.

Q: Can we create apps from Domino data, like you did in the webinar with Excel data?
A: This is something we are working on and hope to have in LEAP at some point.

Q: Will the LEAP generated NSF require new design elements, and will they be visible from Domino Designer?
A: Project Sandstone will take care of everything needed for the NSF.

Q: Can we use custom CSS style sheets with LEAP?
A: Yes, LEAP allows you to attach or point to external style sheets.

Q: Can we add LEAP forms and workflows to existing Domino apps?
A: No. This is not the initial focus of Project Sandstone.

Q: Can I add widgets to the LEAP palette?
A: This is not something LEAP currently allows but is a top customer request.  We are looking into this capability and to how we can open LEAP to third parties for custom extensions.

Q: Can we send an email and make a service call when an action button is clicked?
A: Yes, in fact, you can call multiple services and send multiple emails.

Q: How can LEAP apps be localized?
A: Strings can be externalized for your content and labels and dynamically pulled into the app at runtime based on the locale or language preference.

Q: Can an area/section of a LEAP app contain a grid item from another LEAP app?
A:
Yes, a grid of external information (another LEAP app) can be included in your app by using a table.  The table would be set up to pull the information from that external source based on an event.

Q: Can GPS/Maps be integrated?
A: Yes. LEAP includes a function for determining a user’s location: app.getLocation().  This function will return the users GPS coordinates which you can then dynamically push into an HTML fragment as part of the map embed code.

Other Questions

Q: Where can the certifications be taken?
A: No certification testing has been developed or announce at this point.

Q: What will it take to install LEAP on Domino?
A: Project Sandstone will be a very simple install and will not have any dependencies on anything that you do not already have with Domino.

Q: What technology is LEAP, and how will it run on Domino?
A:
LEAP is a Java program which will run on Domino.

Q: Is Domino still viewed as a low-code platform by HCL, or LEAP?
A: Domino is a low-to pro-code platform, and we are adding Project Sandstone to augment Domino’s strength. Also, Designer is more mid-code as you know. Think of it as Domino improving its tooling.

Q: Do I have to pay extra to get LEAP if I am an existing Domino customer?
A: The plan is to include LEAP on Domino (Project Sandstone) for existing Domino customers.

Q: Will LEAP on Domino be an additional capability that requires us to upgrade our license?
A: No, the plan is not to require this.

Q: Will the planned Project Sandstone replace Domino Designer?
A: No, Project Sandstone is focused on the low-code part of our strategy.  Domino Designer will continue to play an important role with the mid-pro code part of our strategy.

Q: Is it a valid use case for the business user to create apps and then have a pro-coder modify them?
A:
Yes. We often see use cases where business users create the basic structure of an app and pro-coders complete some of the more challenging pieces around integration and custom JavaScript functions.

Q: Can I have multiple people working on a LEAP app at the same time?
A: LEAP is not currently architected for this.  Multiple people can work on an app but not at the same time.

Domino v11: Your Questions Answered

6. September 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

During the August 7, 2019, Domino V11 “Let’s Get Real about Domino” webcast, we covered a lot of ground. Andrew Manby, HCL Software’s AVP of Product Management, presented our up-to-date roadmap for our #dominoforever journey and what it means for developers, administrators, and business users. You had a lot of questions! And we answer them here. To be informed of future updates, please subscribe to our newsletter.

Apps
Q: Will WA (Web Assembly) include offline support for applications?
A: Yes, the ability to run Domino applications on a browser will support online and offline modes, with the support of the NotesID and replication.

Q: What are the plans for Domino Designer? Will it stay as-is for V11?
A: Yes, we are focused on fixes and enhancements, for example, for working with apps deployed on HCL Nomad. Longer-term, we are evolving the tooling for mid-code to pro-code too.

Q: Can you share for everyone where leap is in a sandbox on HCL?
A: You can log in from here.

Q: What’s the future for the ICAA client?
A:  ICAA will continue to be maintained/enhanced, however, the intention is for applications to run natively in the browser using Web Assembly.

Beta
Q: What’s the link to the V11 beta program for Notes, Domino and Sametime?
A: The beta program is now open for registrations.

Cloud
Q: The coming HCL cloud will be apps-only, no mail, right?
A: Please refer to the recent announcement blog by Richard Jefts and bookmark the HCL blog for future updates on our HCL Cloud strategy and plans to help clients on IBM Connections Cloud with their migration path. If you have immediate questions, please speak with your HCL sales representative.

Community
Q: Can we please get a real-time discussion platform to talk to each other?
A: Stay tuned, it is a great question. By the way, you’ll notice the beta forum is using a Domino discussion forum. Woohoo!

Q: Since the designer can be downloaded, will it be possible to run applications in production without buying licenses?
A: Feel free to use the Domino Community Server (for non-production use) for developing and testing applications. Any production use will require a license.

Development
Q: What is the ETA for AppDevPack 1.0.2? Where can I find the previous version?
A: Q3-2019. At this time there is no way in flexnet to search for app dev pack. If you are entitled to it, it will be under the Domino server package.

Q: Do you plan to update and rework the domino designer and fix all the designer bugs?
A: Yes, we’ve been iteratively fixing the backlog of known Designer issues, including those in Xpages. Please participate in the V11 Beta and bang away at the V11 Designer and report any reliability issues in the Beta Forum.

Q: I saw that you want to use react.js in the future. What about angular?
A: Per the Domino AppDev evolution slide, our pro-code UX and stack is going to be using React, of course, you can build your applications using Angular (or Vue) if you like using the AppDev Pack with Node.js.

Q: Is there any integration plan with Domino and IBM Bluemix Services (Object Storage, IBM Watson Services, etc.) to leverage machine learning in Domino App?
A: You can do this already now. LotusScript in V10 supports REST API access. Plus, in V11, we are able to use any S3 compliant tiered storage for DAOS.

Domino
Q: We provide HCL DS private cloud on AWS. The storage multi-server DAOS could work with any kind of hard drive on S3? How to have more information about that in order to prepare our architecture? Thank you.
A: In V11, we are using an S3 interface which is supported by many vendors, you can look at minio as an example of mapping DAOS tier 2 to a filesystem

Q: Will there be an analog of Cloud Object Store for on-premise deployments?
A: The S3 protocol is not dependent on cloud. You can use an on-prem storage system which supports the S3 protocol and configure your Domino servers to use this object-store.

Q: Is there a plan for a native Domino server on Mac?
A: No plans for a Domino server on Mac, however, you can run Docker images with Domino server on the mac with Docker

Downloads
Q: Is there an HCL download link for getting software and fix packs, etc.
Yes. Here is the link.

Strategy
Q: Will you do a big launch like V10 with V11?
A: We will be doing events and webcasts. Stay tuned for details.

Q: Is there a v11 roadshow in Malaysia or Singapore?
A: We are looking at a Factory Tour in AP, and there will be regional post V11 events.

Q: Will the domino programming languages documentation website be moved before the current site is closed?
A: Yes, we’re planning to move all existing content over to an HCL Digital Solutions site.

Integration
Q: Is there a roadmap for LEI (Lotus Enterprise Integrator)?
A: Yes, we are planning to update LEI with V11. The intent is to support both V10 and V11 installations and platforms.

Languages
Q: Any chance of making it possible for us HCL Masters to provide local language versions? I.e. Ukrainian, Kazakh, Belorussian, or Norwegian?
A: While there is no formal plan in place, we’d like to discuss how whether this is possible after the delivery of V11.

Q: When is the next release of the languages for V10 going to be available?
A: Thank you for your patience. The intention is to provide the new packs for the following languages early in Q4-2019. Unfortunately, we have hit some hurdles, and it’s taking longer than we anticipated:

  • Czech
  • Russian
  • Polish
  • Dutch
  • Swedish
  • Arabic

Licensing
Q: Are you saying Domino servers will have to connect to Flexnet servers in order to function?
A: It’s a MUCH simpler licensing mechanism than the very complex IBM licensing, Yes, either online or offline by running a local instance of flexnet.

Q: Seems like a lot of questions about licensing and flexnet… What is flexnet and how does this differ from how we currently use Domino?
A: We intend to host a webcast dedicated to the topic of how Notes, Domino and Sametime will be licensed in V11 with Flexnet. Stay tuned.

Q: What is the future of XWork product and licensing model?
A: XWork Server is a Domino server with a specific license. There are no plans to change this offering.

Q: I understand, but we already received budgeting requests so Q4 will be too late for that.
A: You can still use the existing IBM pricing and licensing model.

Lifecycle
Q: How long after GA of V11 will there be no support for 9 any longer (how long will there be at least R9 Support)?
A: HCL Digital Solution has honored the IBM Support Lifecycle for Notes, Domino and Sametime. You can find the information here.

Mail
Q: Will IMSMO be supported in V11?
A: We fully support IMSMO; in fact, we have merged the IMSMO server component into Traveler already. Plus, we are intended to make the IMSMO integration with Outlook on the client easier in the future. There will be a V11 Traveler server.

Q: Now that V10 has an official Team Calendar, will get an officially supported Team Mailbox Template?
A: We have looked into this topic, and we’re planning to improve our existing template to become more usable for team mailboxes. See here.

Q: Are there any capability to inline edit/update of the attachments in the web like we did in Notes client version
A: There are no plans to support the Notes client or Designer or Admin on Linux. You can use Verse On-Premises and Sametime for mail access and chat on a browser. The Web Assembly work will enable applications to run on a browser too.

Q: Any new tools for co-existing o365/exchange to Domino?
A: At the Factory Tour recently, we announced partnerships with Approved Contact and Ontime to provide Free Busy look up across Exchange, O365, Domino and Google.

Q: Will iNotes officially be replaced by VoP in V11? Or will iNotes still be an option?
A: iNotes will still be an option in V11. However, please investigate our newest release, VOP 1.0.8.

Mobile
Q: What about HCL Nomad on Android Table (Public) Beta Program?
A: Yes, sign up for the Android Tablet and iPhone Beta here.

Q: Would really appreciate a widget to collect a “wet ink” signature in a widget similar to the date widget or pick lists with user “re-sizeable” feature for touchscreen use. Created in Designer and used on a mobile device.
A: Please add this to our AHA portal.

Q: Are we going to get access to mail in HCL Nomad that was promised at Engage?

A: Yes, it’s already working that capability into the current build for the upcoming beta release of HCL Nomad on Android and iPhone. Please sign up for the beta.

Q: Any updates to the iPad client to actually utilize location switching?
A: DMA/Nomad doesn’t support location switching by design.

Platform
Q: Will you continue support for IBM i with version 11?
A: Yes. IBM i is a supported platform.

Q: Is there any plan for 64-bit Notes Client in Windows?
A: Yes, there will be a 64-Bit Windows client available in the V11 beta.

Reporting
Q: Is there any plan to have an ODBC SQL Driver to work later than V9?
A: There is a Technote available that shows how to get the current ODBC SQL Driver to work with V10.

Sametime
Q: What about Sametime and integrations with V11?
A: Sametime is an integrated part of our product portfolio (Notes and Verse), so yes, of course, it will work and will be integrated in V11.

Standards
Q: What JDK version will V11 use?
A: Open JDK 8.

Tools
Q: Will Panagenda be included and support all different client deployments?
A: Panagenda Marvel client will be in V11, specifically, HCL Notes and HCL Nomad.

Workflows
Q: Visual Workflows: does it mean a workflow engine will be embedded into Domino?
A: The combination of LEAP and Domino in V11 will provide simple workflows out of the box. Our intention is to provide a visual workflow building capability for IT/Business within LEAP (in the future). In addition, we are looking at more sophisticated capabilities aimed at the mid-to-pro-coder, again with a Domino Server, for future releases of Domino. Stay tuned.

Xpages
Q: Are you still “working” on the XPages roadmap? Beside “supported”, can we hope for some improvements or are you more working on a “migration” strategy?
A: XPages is a complex environment. So, there is no single answer to the many apps based on XPages. Yes, it is fully supported for the foreseeable future, and we are working on a recommended path. Stay tuned for more information.

It’s Beta Time!

7. August 2019 Posted by Andrew Manby

It’s incredible to think that it’s been about a year since we started the successful Domino V10 beta program. We’ve made so much progress, and now we need your help to keep the momentum going.
We are excited to announce the HCL Domino V11 portfolio beta program, and call on our community to share honest, constructive and thoughtful review and testing of the Domino V11 portfolio beta software.
The beta program will include HCL Domino V11, HCL Notes V11, and HCL Sametime V11. Your input is essential to how we develop our products — and we want to make sure we listen to you and involve you before we make this release generally available at the end of 2019.

We’re seeking people who meet the following criteria:

  • A business end-user, administrator, or developer who has prior knowledge of Domino, Notes, Sametime and Designer
  • Those who bring diverse (role/industry/geography/company size) attributes to the beta team so we can ensure we get a balanced blend of input perspectives

HCL is looking for participants to:

  • Share their use case for the beta in their company
  • Engage in a dialog about Domino V11 and provide timely feedback
  • Be constructive and professional in all written/spoken interaction with program members, and HCL
  • Attend the web conferences and meetings pertaining to the beta program
  • Experience the beta in a non-production environment
  • Provide feedback on your application server upgrade experience
  • Review and comment on documentation
  • Help us streamline your Flexnet setup process
  • Be open to the idea of becoming a reference for Domino V11 or Sametime V11

The beta program will be in two phases:

Beta 1: We will form an initial group of beta participants, based on the submissions received and then qualify and approve for beta program enrollment. Beta 1 will begin on September 4th, 2019.

What you can test in beta 1:

  • Domino (Window and Linux)
  • Notes client (Windows and Mac)
  • Notes, Designer & Admin clients (Windows)
  • Sametime multilingual embedded client

This beta is English-only.

Beta 2: We will extend the initial group of beta 1 participants as we get further along in the development cycle for Domino V11, by including additional participants at the Beta 2 stage. We expect the beta 2 phase to begin the second half of October 2019.  Submissions received up to October 7th, for those not included in the Beta 1 group, will be considered for inclusion in the beta 2 phase.

What you can expect to test in beta 2:

  • Domino (Windows, AIX, i Series, and Linux)
  • Notes client (Windows and Mac)
  • Notes, Designer & Admin clients (Windows)
  • Traveler
  • Sametime

Additional languages TBD.

To learn what’s new in Domino V11, please listen to the recent What’s New in Domino V11 webcast.

Note: No travel is required.

Thank you for your participation and your passion for the portfolio.
