Enterprise technology and application development are accelerating at record-setting speed, directly impacting your digital transformation strategies. Explore the capability and value of Domino’s rapid application development tools to support hyperautomation — and accelerate your business growth.

As the past few years have demonstrated, the entire business landscape can undergo sudden, transformative shifts that force the rapid-fire development of comprehensive solutions that address real business needs– like workflow improvements and business automation.

Organizations are coming to the realization that hyperautomation is essential to a digital transformation journey. But what’s the secret to enabling hyperautomation and becoming an industry leader? Rapid Application Development (RAD).

Hyperautomation as a means of survival

Hyperautomation is an approach to automating business and IT processes organization-wide to streamline and accelerate workflow.

Despite the established prevalence of business automation, too many companies are still hampered by siloed applications and inefficient workflows even though workflow efficiency is considered an organizational priority. The move toward hyperautomation is a natural progression for companies looking to speed up digital transformation and have more impact on reducing costs, increasing customer engagement, and optimizing business processes. In some cases, it is a means remaining competitive.

“Hyperautomation has shifted from an option to a condition of survival,” said Fabrizio Biscotti, research vice president at Gartner. “Organizations will require more IT and business process automation as they are forced to accelerate digital transformation plans in a […] digital-first world.”

In fact, a recent Gartner survey found that 85% of respondents are planning to increase or sustain their hyperautomation investment strategies, and over half of these said their companies had several hyperautomation projects underway.

Harnessing the power of hyperautomation – through Rapid Application Development

Overall, hyperautomation is about integrating people, processes, and technology and that’s why RAD is central to digital transformation. Using a rapid application development platform, like Domino, makes it easy to empower your workforce, accelerate innovation and streamline work. For the past thirty years Domino has been a has been a favorite of developers and IT organizations who value usable software that works. The primary success of RAD is based on providing developers with a repository of reusable code, easy database access, quick app design, and a focus on a simplified approach.

Key benefits of rapid application development

  1. Faster delivery of process improvements and applications – RAD ensures faster delivery with preset components and ready-made adapters.
  2. Lower development costs – while skilled developers are necessary, a shortened development cycle can more than offset those costs.
  3. Fewer coding errors – preset components can help eliminate repetitive errors thus improving software quality.
  4. Shorter cycle time for updates – easier modifications through compartmentation of components.
  5. Comprehensive integration toolset – ready-made adapters, APIs and components enable quick integration and access to data.

Product Announcement: HCL Domino License Simplification

29. Juni 2023 Posted by Dan Allen

Product Announcement: HCL Domino License Simplification

Today, June 29, 2023, HCLSoftware announces several changes to further simplify our Domino portfolio licensing and capabilities:

  1. End Of Marketing (EOM) and End Of Support (EOS) of Domino Utility Server and Domino Utility Express server licenses and part numbers.
  2. The addition of the Domino License Analysis Utility tool (DLAU) to help establish a CCB/CCX entitlement baseline and security health check.
  3. EOM and EOS of the Domino AppDev Pack Supporting Program.

HCLSoftware continues to simplify its Domino licensing based on the Domino Complete Collaboration (CCB) model – a modern, per-user, licensing model comprised of:

HCL Domino Complete Collaboration Business Edition (CCB) for the B2E and B2C users,

HCL Domino Complete Collaboration eXternal User (CCX) for B2B users,

HCL Domino Complete Collaboration Solution Partner Edition (CCS) for ISVs.

CCB is the only license entitling customers to all Domino’s features, updates, and supporting programs. To realize all the benefits, HCL strongly recommends that customers move to CCB licensing and upgrade to Domino version 12.0.2 as soon as possible.

Following an adoption rate of over 70% for CCB licensing and with many more planning to move to CCB, we are making the Domino License Analysis Utility (DLAU) tool available to enable customers to perform a baseline count of the needed CCB/CCX entitlements for any Domino configuration and, at the same time, to perform a security “health check” on your Domino deployment.

1 – Deprecating Utility and Utility Express licenses and part numbers
Today, June 29, 2023, HCLSoftware completes the move away from server-only licensing. Utility Server and Utility Server Express were based on Processor Value Unit licensing, an old license metric no longer relevant in a modern Cloud / Kubernetes world. Effective today, HCL is announcing the immediate End of Marketing (EOM) of the following part numbers. In addition, these parts and licenses will be End of Support on June 30, 2024:

A picture containing text, screenshot, font, number Description automatically generated

Effective with this announcement, EOM means these parts are no longer available for purchase.

EOS means that HCLSoftware no longer provides Support Benefits for these products after June 30, 2024.

To enable you to continue under support, you need to move to Domino CCB/CCX licensing at your next renewal. To help you do this, you must run the DLAU tool to assess your environment and share the report with your HCLSoftware business partner or HCL sales representative as input into obtaining a quote.

2 – Introducing the Domino License Analysis Utility (DLAU) tool.
DLAU will assist you in determining the entitlements needed for Domino CCB licensing of your complete Domino deployment. DLAU is a non-intrusive tool only scanning server log files and configurations and is fully GDPR compliant. DLAU is currently available to any Domino customer full documentation and instructions on using the tool are here:

https://opensource.hcltechsw.com/domino-license-analysis-utility-DLAU/

A downloadable version of DLAU will be included along with Domino in the HCL License & Download portal over the coming months before Domino v14 ships.

3 – EOM and EOS of Domino AppDev Pack.
Due to the success of the Domino REST APIs, HCLSoftware will remove Domino AppDev pack as a supporting program. Specifically, the Domino AppDev Pack will no longer be:

  • Available for download from the HCL License & Download portal after September 20, 2023.
  • Supported after December 31, 2023. Customers and partners with a perpetual entitlement can continue to run it unsupported if they choose.

Customers and partners who have deployed the Domino AppDev Pack should use the Domino REST APIs instead. The Domino REST APIs were released in version 12.0.2 and are available under CCB entitlements.

If you have any questions about this announcement or have Domino licensing questions, please contact your HCL product specialist or Business Partner.

Make Everyone a Developer

Make Everyone a Developer

Harness the power of citizen development by enabling business users to solve their own challenges with low-code development. Learn to accelerate your application development by creating powerful apps without writing a single line of code.

Thanks to low-code platforms, citizen developers are now an integral part of the modern workplace ecosystem.

In 2021, Garner estimated that, in two years, citizen developers were expected to outnumber professional developers 4 to 1. More recently, Gartner predicts that, by 2025, organizations will use low-code or no-code technologies to develop 70% of new applications, up from less than 25% in 2020.

The reason? Low-code and no-code app development can save critical time, maximize business resources, and unleash the creative potential of just about any workforce.

No-code development is easy to implement, cost effective, and is definitely here to stay. Rewind to a few years ago: Gartner began using the term citizen developerin 2009 to describe business users who build software applications to automate processes for themselves and their teams. Since then, the citizen developer movement has seen exponential growth across both industries and borders.

Pursuing the goal of 100 percent employee buy-in is a forward-looking strategy that strengthens your organization’s commitment to digital transformation and leverages the value of your true human resources to the fullest. Prioritizing the citizen developer workforce helps you keep pace with app development and maintain a competitive edge.

Why are citizen developers essential to business?

With customers and employees eager for new applications, features, and digital interactions across multiple touchpoints, IT departments simply cannot keep up with the demand. As a result, operations and administrative departments increasingly rely on citizen developers from their teams to build web and mobile apps that perform essential workplace tasks like customer quote calculators, gated offers, approval tracking, and other workflow optimizations.

Citizen developers are empowered to create solutions to improve workflow and productivity as well as help gain actionable business insights, all without any specialized training. Passing off the creation of simple apps to citizen developers can free up your application engineers and data scientists to deal with more high-level challenges and tasks. It also eliminates the need to hire additional experts.

Along with these improvements, there is great value in the quality work citizen developers can produce via a rapid app development platform like HCL Domino Leap.

As talented as IT employees might be, they will never be able to bring the same industry expertise or nuanced understanding of the subject matter as those who work in that specific department every day.

What’s more, if IT departments are reluctant to embrace citizen developers, then business owners will inevitably procure apps outside the purview of IT to get this necessary work accomplished. While these applications help support essential business activities and are readily available through the cloud, these so-called “shadow IT” apps bypass established governance processes and can significantly increase an organization’s security risks.

HCL Domino Leap, on the other hand, empowers your business users to bring their own creative spark and front-line knowledge to fore, building apps that help gain valuable insights from stored data and help businesses respond directly to challenges or opportunities as they arise.

Enabling business users to harness the power of analytics also has an extremely beneficial effect on the work environment, facilitating intra-departmental collaboration in an atmosphere of cooperation. Employees can work across departments, generating workflow-related and customer-facing apps that lead to real solutions.

Last, but not least, with HCL Domino Leap, your organization can eliminate shadow IT. The Leap platform provides IT administrative controls, meaning your IT can establish “guardrails” to manage and control citizen developers’ capabilities and adherence to security protocols.

How to develop your own citizen developers

Building apps through a platform like HCL Domino Leap doesn’t require a background in data analytics or engineering. Still, to reach the goal of making everyone a developer, companies must take deliberate steps to ensure success.

For instance, there must be a clear demarcation of responsibilities between professionals and citizen developer teams. Training in security measures, compliance procedures, and workflow processes is also essential.

HCL Domino Leap is a trusted and secure rapid application development platform designed to let businesses leverage the power of their citizen developer initiatives, specifically in the creation of workflow-based apps. Thanks to a no-code development platform, businesses can streamline operations, increase development resources, save time, and improve compliance, among other key advantages.

How to encourage innovation

The ability to create market-ready apps, sometimes in just minutes, is a true game-changer. Instead of inefficient paper-based processes and time-consuming email chains that squander valuable hours, your workforce has the freedom to dream up the kind of innovative user-facing apps your business needs.

HCL Domino Leap’s simple, intuitive no-code platform features a new visual designer equipped with drop-and-drag capabilities. Starting with a blank canvas or spreadsheet, employees can quickly test iterations, optimize as necessary, and create finished, market-ready apps in a shortened time frame with minimal training.

HCL Domino Leap enables easy app creation that allows any industry to meet its own specific challenges, whether it’s in healthcare, finance, manufacturing, or retail. It empowers business employees to create the apps they want, without the need to wait for an IT department to create them.

The platform’s low-code capabilities aren’t the only selling points—it also features rock-solid security and easy integrations. Take HCL Domino Leap out for a free spin!

Making everyone a citizen developer is a nimble approach to solving business challenges. Smaller-scale initiatives generated by this constituency can be tested quickly, receive rapid feedback, and be put into place. This means that your business can innovate by prioritizing numerous risk-free smaller successes instead of wasting resources on potentially risky and costly large-scale projects.

How to Continue Working from Anywhere — and Grow Your Business

How to Continue Working from Anywhere — and Grow Your Business

Employees want the ability to work from anywhere — their mobile phone, their kitchen table, or the company’s physical office. Flexibility is now key for hiring and retaining talent.

In a 2022 survey of currently employed people, FlexJobs found that more than half (57%) said they would leave their jobs if they don’t get remote work options. This means, your organization depends on your employees being able to access the apps they require to do their jobs from wherever they like.

Providing this ability, however, may feel challenging. IT departments’ to-do lists are overflowing with tasks and projects. At the same time, many organizations are facing budget cuts and finding the time to research new tools simply doesn’t exist.

There’s an easy answer to this conundrum. Companies are increasingly discovering that there’s a tool that solves many of these challenges — HCL Domino Nomad.

Make everyone an app developer

With the recent upgrade to v12, HCL Domino modernized its ecosystem and created a powerful tool that helps your organization adapt to today’s workforce needs: Your employees need quick access to their apps to manage projects, serve clients, and help your business grow.

In addition to having the ability to access current apps, employees require new apps that digitize previously manual processes, make it possible to work from anywhere, and save time. Domino helps you to make your existing apps web- and mobile-ready with just a few clicks through a desktop, tablet, mobile phone, or web browser. You can quickly deliver the apps to Apple iPhone and iPad, Android tablets, and Chrome OS.

Because the latest Domino version also can help create web apps, employees can access their apps from any web browser. Instead of waiting weeks for the tools they need, your team has the apps they need in minutes.

As employees see the productivity gains and improved flexibility of mobile apps, it’s likely that you will quickly see requests for new apps to streamline your organizational processes and tasks.

Domino makes it easy for even non-developers to create new apps in 70% less time. Because technical skills aren’t needed, employees can take control of their own processes and feel empowered to make improvements in their work.

Gain efficiency with no required client upgrades

Previously, an installation of Domino Notes Client was required to create apps and databases. The newest version of Domino allows you to run Notes applications in a standard browser — or even on a mobile phone.

With the new version, your IT staff can reduce their management responsibilities, as there’s no longer a need to upgrade clients or provide desktop support.

Because the new version runs clientless, IT teams can significantly reduce the time and resources spent managing applications. Fewer help tickets mean your IT team can focus on digital transformation and other customer-facing projects.

Provide flexibility for your workforce

Domino takes the work-from-anywhere concept to a totally new level.

The platform works in the offline mode when there’s no internet or an unreliable connection, so your employees can continue to work even on an oil drilling rig or a cruise ship. Once they get to a location that has a network connection, they can upload their work and synchronize the changes.

Your team can also tailor their experience based on their preferences and needs, such as building apps that access their device’s camera, files, location, and native mobile gestures. You can also restyle older apps to update the interface to make it easier to use or give it a more modern appearance. To save even more time, you can update multiple apps at the same time.

Many organizations mistakenly assume they need multiple solutions — an ERP system, a CRM, and an HR system. With HCL Domino, you can use your existing tool to create situation apps and workflows that help you solve your biggest business challenges. Learn more about Nomad and the business-forward capabilities of the latest version of HCL Domino.

Top 10 Facts: Why Low Code Should Be Essential to Your Business

14. April 2023 Posted by Dan Allen

Top 10 Facts: Why Low Code Should Be Essential to Your Business

The digital transformation that forward-looking companies are intent on making requires the adoption of a platform that streamlines operations, reduces costs, and taps the full potential of the workforce — a low-code application development platform.

Here are the basics about low code and why it offers the best solution for sustainable success in today’s dynamic business environment.

What is a low-code application development platform?

A low-code development platform is an integrated software development environment that’s used to create apps through a graphical user interface. Before low code, building apps meant long development cycles of writing complicated code, then testing and debugging the software. A low-code app development platform (LCAP) replaces coding with intuitive visual tools, saving resources and requiring no advanced training to deliver sophisticated apps quickly and efficiently.

No-code platforms are even simpler to use and are particularly valuable to business users for finding innovative workplace solutions. This includes solving problems such as customer quotations and pricing approvals, employee onboarding, job applications, and CRM, which result in empowering employees and improving the customer experience.

Why are low-code platforms important? Why are low-code/no-code platforms becoming popular?

No code is the fastest, easiest, most cost-effective way to build business apps and empower citizen developers in the workplace to gain quick insights, eliminate wasteful procedures, collaborate, and innovate. Employees without any software engineering skills can create industry-specific apps that were once the sole province of IT departments.

Placing app-building capabilities in the hands of employees is crucial for an organization to stay competitive in our world where digitization and data are key to success. With more and more companies relying on low code / no code to automate antiquated systems and processes, Gartner predicts that low code will power the creation of 70% of new applications by 2025.

What are the benefits of low code?

A low-code platform can help businesses meet their most essential goals: reduce waste, replace inefficient systems with new cost-effective processes, and access fast, accurate insights that lead to enhanced business outcomes and improved employee and customer satisfaction.

Additionally, these platforms lessen the risk of so-called “shadow IT” — digital solutions created by employees that are not under the purview of the IT department — and even offer the prospect of turning these resources into assets.

“It’s worth acknowledging two truths: shadow IT is essential for business operations, and talent capable of creating applications often resides outside the IT department,” write McKinsey experts. “Despite its utility, shadow IT poses a serious security risk to all organizations, but enterprises have an incredible opportunity to transform it into an area of innovation and speed.”

A powerful low-code platform improves efficiency and increases productivity while reducing risk and eliminating the need to revamp old systems or hire additional personnel to adopt a new platform. HCL Domino Leap, for instance, is a proven platform that Fortune 500 companies depend on to leverage the power, security, and innovative technology they need to stay on the leading edge.

How secure is a low-code platform?

A company’s data is its most valuable asset. That’s why top-flight businesses rely on low-code platforms that have rock-solid security, governance and control, email security, and easy integration in their DNA.

Low-code platforms have strong built-in security and when combined with a set of zero-trust rules, they can prevent most data breaches and cyberattacks. What’s more, they include a set of tools to counter the infamous human factor.

“No matter how good the low-code tool is, there’s still a chance that employees will be tempted to create applications beyond the security radar,” Jonathan Reed writes in Security Intelligence. “For this reason, built-in permissions go a long way in maintaining good governance.” Proper training, testing and gate-keeping are key here.

For years, HCL Domino has set a standard for security in the app dev world. It’s so reliable, safe and secure that accounting firms and banks trust their audit processes to Domino Leap.

What can I do with no code? What can I build with a low-code platform?

A no-code platform lets employees create their own tools to help them do their jobs better and more efficiently. Rather than putting in a request to the IT department to come up with a solution to improve workflow, they can do it themselves — in any aspect of the business ecosystem.

From tracking expenses to the submission and approval of documents to case management and candidate recruitment, a high-performance low-code platform such as HCL Domino Leap enables the workforce to easily implement workplace enhancements and gain real-time insights that drive innovation. Check out the Domino Leap showroom to see what’s possible.

How long does it take to put a low-code platform into place?

Switching to a low-code platform transforms businesses, but it is not a time-consuming process. It can be up and running in days, not the weeks or months that adopting a new platform often takes.

Right out of the box, Domino Leap is complete and fully secure in one install — an all-in-one application server ready to help start solving business challenges. The latest version offers low code and a host of features that make it easier than ever to tap the full potential of citizen developers while improving employee and customer experiences.

The best news? Update to the latest version of HCL Domino to take full advantage of this visionary solution.

Will low code replace programmers?

Low code puts app-building capability in the hands of novice developers and designers instead of relying on seasoned software engineers. But it doesn’t eliminate the need for coding or for sophisticated programming experts.

That means that programmers will be less relied upon by the general workforce for all IT-related requests and can focus on higher-level issues like planning, architecture, DevOps, and security.

By mitigating the risk of shadow IT, low-code platforms further un-burden IT professionals from having to perform low-level but necessary tasks — speeding up development time and improving productivity and employee satisfaction.

Does digital transformation require coding?

The rise of no-code and low-code platforms has transformed the work traditionally performed by professional developers, but coding is still very much a valued and necessary part of the move toward digital transformation.

Low code automates thousands of basic tasks, but software engineering skills are still required for high-level innovation, custom development of consumer applications, and other vital initiatives.

In today’s business landscape, speed is of the essence. As organizations continue to prioritize digital transformation, they are increasingly turning to low-code platforms to speed up that initiative.

Is low-code development faster?

The success of low-code platforms in speeding up the app-development process has transformed the business world in recent years. What used to take weeks or months of traditional development can now be accomplished and put into practice in a matter of hours or even minutes.

HCL Domino Leap enables citizen developers to build applications with ready-made components — such as customer lead capture, special customer offers or business dashboards — in minutes. With minimal effort, employees can make their apps mobile and web-ready, meeting customers (and their colleagues) where they are and giving them the accessibility they want. Once an app is finished, it then can be turned into a template for others to use.

Is low code scalable? How customizable is a low-code platform?

Scalability is a key feature of any high-performance low-code/no-code development platform. An agile, intuitive interface and ease of use means employees can continually come up with new solutions and processes based on up-to-the-minute insights without the involvement of a company’s IT professionals. Whether it’s a mining operation or a clothing retailer, end users can create industry-specific apps that maximize efficiency and tap their own creative potential.

No code includes pre-configured visual tools that make it easy for business users with no formal software training to develop custom apps — without writing a single line of code. Guided by a user experience that takes them through the process, citizen developers can easily customize the way their apps look and function. As businesses grow, they can leverage more citizen developers to collaborate and improve their workflows.

HCL Domino Leap offers enterprises a low-code development platform that accelerates the design, building, and deployment of applications while eliminating the need to revamp old systems or hire new personnel to adopt a new platform.

The drive toward digitization and the rise of citizen developers across the business landscape have raised low-code development to a position of strategic importance. Low code’s many advantages — ease of use, security, productivity improvement — align with goals and objectives of organizations challenged to keep pace with the ever-increasing speed of application delivery.

Low code offers a solution that taps the potential of a company’s resources — both human and digital — leading to improved outcomes across the board. Give HCL Domino Leap a try now!

Although work environment changes due to the pandemic have shown that companies can function with a large part of their workforce working remotely, questions remain about how to effectively support employee engagement and communication. Employee communication is not just integral to the employee experience because it drives engagement, but it also contributes to employee satisfaction, productivity, collaboration and ultimately your business’s success.

Let’s begin with this question, “How do you create effective communication channels for employees when you’re not face-to-face?” There was an adage I learned when I first became a manager, communicate face-to-face as much as you can. Those were the days when your main communication options were limited to email and face-to-face meetings. That’s not to say that face-to-face meetings are outdated, but today’s reality for communicating with employees is much different and more challenging. Attitudes have changed, and — thankfully — the tools to communicate have multiplied. Let’s take a look how remote work transitions are impacting CEO thinking and decision-making.

Rethinking the Ways We Communicate

KPMG did a survey with CEOs on the pandemic’s impact on business operations. The most striking outcome was that the pandemic has forced CEOs to rethink how they work and communicate within their organizations. Learning to operate in a remote or hybrid work environment is certainly more complicated, and this new work model has challenged CEOs to reevaluate business norms.

  • Three quarters of the CEOs surveyed said they would continue to invest in digital collaboration and communication tools because these tools help fill communication and engagement gaps.
  • Interestingly, 73% of CEOs found that when hiring, a remote or hybrid working environment is more attractive to perspective employees. The employee experience is typically a key factor for people in deciding on new career choices.
  • 69% of CEOs said they would be down-sizing office space to save money. That’s a clear indication that some employees are never returning to work in the office.
  • And 68% of CEOs, when challenged to communicate with a remote workforce, have retooled their communication strategy with new communication methods and modes.

But some key challenges remain for companies, including how to instill and sustain a corporate culture along with company values.

Information Consumption is Changing

Now let’s switch our discussion from management to employees. Before we can understand how to facilitate employee communication, we must first understand how information is consumed in today’s work environment. Recent studies show most people check their email or instant messages every 6 minutes. It’s no wonder that information consumption is up 500% over the past three decades. Even though more information is being consumed, information overload is a real problem. Given the rate of information consumption, the way information is delivered needs to change.

There are new expectations from employees on how information should be received. Employees born after 1980, for example, have been connected to technology most of their lives and have higher expectations for communication. Employees today want to receive information when and where they want it, in a familiar format that doesn’t overwhelm them. They want to personalize information flow and limit it to what’s important for their specific role. Since employees use multiple devices to access information, they also want to be able to consume information across any of their devices.

To summarize more concisely, information flow should be frequent, multi-channel, multi-format, and most importantly continuous and measured. This allows you to be more effective in reaching employees where and when they are ready — in a way that resonates with them.

What’s the Difference Between Engagement and Collaboration?

Employee communication is not just management providing information to employees. There is a much broader spectrum of communication and exchange in the today’s work environment. This spectrum covers everything from employee engagement to employee collaboration, whether it’s 2-way communication between employees and management, or a team project facilitating communication between team members. The one thing we need to recognize is that engagement and collaboration success is completely dependent on effective communication channels.

Employee communication is essential for attaining organizational goals and for achieving the many daily successes that add up to positive business outcomes. You can divide communication up into two components: engagement and collaboration. Employee engagement is about keeping employees focused on the right goals, making sure they understand the company values and practices, and providing the training and tools necessary for them to get their job done.

Employee collaboration, on the other hand, is about work management, teams and the many interactions we have both inside and outside the company. When you look at engagement and collaboration, these are fundamental business drivers for organizational success. These business drivers have a substantial impact on the employee experience. Studies show that organizations that are good at engagement and collaboration have far less staff turnover, higher productivity, and higher profitability.

Solutions for Real Communication Problems

A European cable manufacturer, which employees about 5,000 people, was frustrated with their employee intranet. Their existing site was outdated, static and didn’t generate the employee interaction the company desired. Their objective was to provide a new intranet portal or employee information hub which empowers two-way communication, enables a personalized experience, and provides a multi-channel approach.

A global package delivery company with more than 100,000 workers, 70% which are deskless and highly mobile, needed a collaboration platform to increase two-way employee communication, ideation, and faster decision-making. Management wanted to start their collaboration efforts by soliciting ideas about improving peak season deliveries for the upcoming holiday season.

A multinational engineering and architectural firm needed to coordinate with over 700 employees and thousands of construction projects to improve coordination for solving complex design problems, finding specialized expertise quickly, sharing best practices, and ensuring customer deadlines are met.

What do all these scenarios have in common? The need to improve communication, collaborative work management, and employee engagement to get work done more effectively. Effective communication and collaborative problem-solving requires a framework with ready-made tools and templates to support best practices. HCL Connections delivered a solution for all three companies to solve their diverse business challenges.

With more and more employees working remotely, it’s more important than ever to provide collaborative tools to meet these communication challenges. Digital Tools to Transform the Employee Experience

15. April 2021 Posted by Dan Allen

Every successful company invests in customer experiences, but far fewer are making the kind of investments in employee experiences that truly matter. As companies add more and more applications to support their business and customers, employee experiences can be neglected — even though now the need has never been greater. Digital platforms and tools are an essential component of an effective business to employee (B2E) strategy.

An employee experience is the sum of interactions and exchanges an employee has within their company — both personally and organizationally. How an employee perceives his or her journey through all the touchpoints within the organization matters. A lot. Why? Because employees are the true drivers of your business and the better the employee experience, ultimately, the better the customer experience. A Gallup study found “that companies with highly engaged employees outperform their competitors by 147% in earnings per share,” and that highly engaged employees are energized through an exceptional digital workplace.

Businesses are also seeing a cultural shift with new norms and expectations from employees. Add to that the recent pandemic, which has accelerated the use of digital tools and driven the need for companies to invest in digital platforms like never before. As employee demands and outside pressures continually grow, companies can’t afford to ignore these expectations if they want to attract and retain talented employees and teams.

Employee portals are key to improving the overall employee experience. Whether it’s an employee searching for IT support documentation or taking an eLearning class online, these B2E portals offer the opportunity for businesses to radically improve the employee experience.

You first need to understand why your employees would be using intranet portals. Are portals used to collaborate with other employees, search for answers to common questions or just necessary for getting work done? Gaining insight from employee interactions creates a currency, based on the data collected, to improve outcomes for the employee and the business. Employee experiences should be treated with as much care and analysis as customer experiences, since your employee is just as important.

Then, you should decide what will deliver the most value for your employees and business. As an example, eLearning might be a high priority if you are introducing a new product line. Or, you may have an urgent need to introduce employee self-service portals to optimize resources, reduce wait times and increase productivity. Sometimes with existing systems applications and data, needed by many employees, can only be accessed by certain departments, hampering access and causing frustration. Regardless of the need, companies should focus on solving business problems while at the same time driving increased employee efficiencies and collaboration.

Remember, that improving the employee experience should also include personalization, when it adds specific value. You could enable a customizable employee homepage to surface crucial information that can be tailored to make it easier for employees to get their job done. You could also customize content by role, or position within the company, to ensure information is only accessible and relevant to that role’s daily tasks. Personalized training for employees can be added based on their specific role and set up to track their personal development journey. In a Forbes research study, 86% of employees said they would change jobs if it resulted in more opportunities for personal development. Investing in a more personalized approach increases employee satisfaction and could potentially improve employee retention for your top talent. Today, thanks to advanced DXP tools, personalization can easily be applied to all your employees for an enriched experience.

Ultimately the employee experience, good or bad, will continue to impact your customers and your business success. Harnessing the power of your DXP may be your single-most important tool to drive the improvements needed in today’s business environment. This added intelligence can help you construct a truly integrated platform that transforms the employee experience. The employee intranet and associated portals are the best way to drive more engagement, innovation and productivity.

Why Video is More Essential Now than Ever in the Digital Workplace

8. Oktober 2020 Posted by Dan Allen

As more and more teams are working remotely in digital workplaces, making news and content immediately accessible is more important than ever to both companies and their employees. The way we consume and communicate information has changed dramatically and the value of video has become even more apparent as a vehicle for dissemination. In fact, studies show that  67% of people understand information better when it’s communicated visually, and younger workers are twice as likely to prefer visual communications than their counterparts.

Not only do employees prefer video for content delivery, visual content can be more easily absorbed and understood. So, when you need to convey important messages and information, video is not only preferred, it is more efficient. It should be no surprise that video has completely transformed our content consumption habits both at work and at home.

Rise of the remote worker

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of remote workers increased 159% over the past decade, due in part to the ongoing digital workplace transition. The pandemic has accelerated this trend and poses significant communication challenges for companies. With a highly dispersed workforce on-demand video communication delivers an incredible advantage.

Keeping employees engaged and productive with minimal face-to-face interaction has become more challenging. “ As many as a third (36%) of employees say their motivation levels have been affected by poor company-wide communications.” Long corporate emails turn off many employees and go unread. Video provides multi-sensory engagement and also more closely replicates being in the same room with your colleague. Videos can help close the communications gap for your remote workforce.

Get and keep your employee’s attention

Only 40% of employees report that they are well informed about their company’s goals, strategies, and tactics,” according to the Harvard Business review. How can we expect employees to be motivated and productive if they don’t know what’s going on? How much information is actually being consumed and understood? Forrester Research study indicates that employees are 75% more likely to watch a video than read text. Video is preferred because it provides a more human, personal touch.

Building or shifting the company culture is another major challenge, especially when transitioning to a digital workplace. The employee intranet is a crucial component and when it comes to promoting your company culture, on-demand video should be an integral part of your strategy.  Whether delivering employee on-boarding and training, organizational announcements, tutorials, product announcements and recording live-streaming events, video ensures a consistent experience — both in terms of delivery and information. It also affords the opportunity to capture insights regarding your audience. Viewership and engagement metrics can also help guide the process and direct the company to the type of content and information employees pay attention to and value most.

Aintranet experience that employees love

Originally an intranet portal was simply an internal homepage to share news and information, principally a corporate bulletin board. Now it’s considered an essential element of a modern digital workplace to promote genuine dialog, facilitate employee self-service, deliver eLearning, and act as a gateway to business applications. Additionally, in-video quizzes and polls can help capture employees’ attention.

If you need to learn how to do something quickly, where do you turn? YouTube of course. Because YouTube has an unbelievable library of how-to videos to easily guide you through any problem. Employee intranet portals should adopt the same approach – utilizing video-based guides to portal services and applications. This approach will shorten the learning curve for new hires and also promote a self-service culture.

Empowering employees and saving money

Saving time and money is also part of the equation. eLearning videos, rather than classroom training, can help reduce trainer costs, travel dollars and travel time while also providing employees scheduling flexibility.

Employee self-service (ESS) portals can help reduce administrative overhead, while at the same time, keeping personal information more up to date. From speeding up on-boarding of new hires, requesting time off or rolling out new employee benefits, ESS can be an effective tool to increase employee empowerment and satisfaction. Incorporating on-demand videos to explain benefit packages or provide a how-to reference guide are crucial to successful self-service portals. There is also value in enabling employees to create, upload, and edit videos to enhance employee engagement and create a stronger sense of ownership.

Meeting the digital workplace challenge

Your digital workplace plans should align with your business goals and provide your employees with an environment and work tools focused on productivity and collaboration. Creating a high-performing workforce should be at the core of your strategy. To support a high-performing workforce you need an employee intranet portal to streamline communication, deliver business applications and drive cultural change.

Since nothing communicates quite like video, build a video library, accessible from your intranet portal, to help support and speed up your digital transformation. Use your internal experts to share their insight or give your executive team a forum for sharing company announcements, goals and successes. Video has gone from nice-to-have to absolutely essential for supporting your digital transformation.
