The 4 Keys to Enterprise Chat Apps. What is secure enterprise chat, and why do I need it?

27. August 2020 Posted by HCL Sametime Team

In today’s work world, chat and video meetings are integral to getting work done.  But organizations need to pick solutions that are safe, cost-effective, and make sense for the business. And, given the global push toward remote work, employee engagement is key. Connecting employees in a meaningful way takes more than just an easy chat feature. It’s also ensuring that the information shared is reaching the intended audience — while meeting the regulatory standards of your industry.

Providing your teams with a secure chat messaging accomplishes both important goals — connection and protection — freeing your enterprise from security and compliance concerns and creating more time to focus on doing great work.

But what, specifically, makes secure chat important, and why should enterprise companies care?

  1. Employees are Already Using Chat Apps, but They Need Secure Messaging

The reality is that most people are using a chat service to connect with colleagues. Knowing that should motivate enterprises to standardize the chat platform it offers its employees.

Not offering a secure chat option won’t deter employees from using a messaging app, it will just result in them using whatever chat service they personally like, secure or not.  This is also known as a shadow IT problem. A universal chat solution can streamline workflow while enhancing the company’s data transparency and keeping things secure.

As mobile messaging platforms continue to grow in popularity and functionality, people accustomed to consumer messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger will incorporate those into their work life unless given an alternative.  Those consumer platforms are fine for personal chat, but the end-to-end encryption they include blocks access to communication data that is required in many enterprise verticals.

The solutions your organization provides needs to be easy to use, secure, and modern. Enterprise systems must provide a collaboration tool that can handle a fluid workflow while simultaneously meeting the security protocols of the industry they serve.

2. Enterprise Collaboration Tools Need Enterprise Data Security

Popular free apps are fine for individuals communicating with friends and family, but when that use drifts into the workplace it becomes a reality check for enterprise companies.  The inability of companies to monitor these apps can pose a security risk and create a dilemma if called upon to provide stored employee communications records for auditing purposes.

The staff at a local government agency might find iMessenger perfectly convenient, but when that agency is audited to ensure compliance with federal regulations… it’s not going to end well. Reviewing all the electronic communications involving that partnership is now required but will be nearly impossible since iMessenger communications can’t be viewed due to encryption settings that aren’t enterprise compatible.

The result? The company is vulnerable to legal action or worse.

Encryption software is vital: it maintains the privacy of employees while giving enterprises an archiving and auditing tool that protects them and their clients.

This is critical for enterprise companies working with financial institutions and government entities, industries with strict compliance and regulatory standards.  There are a wide array of tax and accounting obligations, legal requirements, and data protection laws that must be met, and for which transparently archived data is needed.  If there are employee communications that cannot be documented and audited it can be a serious problem.  Lawsuits can result, professional reputations can be tarnished, millions in fines can be spent.

That’s why consumer messaging apps aren’t secure enough for enterprise needs.

3. Enterprise Security + Consumer-Level Ease of Use

A secure enterprise messaging app must have similar functionality to that of a consumer messaging app, but with the additional capability to ensure secure and auditable communications for employees.

It starts with data safety and compliance. But what if you also had modern, easy and straight-forward usability? A secure enterprise chat platform, such as Sametime from HCL, has encryption software built in to the core that protects all chats, files, and videos from external threats while providing the auditability needed to meet all industry regulations. It also has one-click meetings, no need to download software to start a meeting, persistent chat to preserve all collaboration even after a meeting has ended — plus it works on any device, even while at rest.

4. On-Premise or Cloud Deployment

With secure enterprise chat you get the functionality of a consumer messaging chat service, along with peace of mind knowing your data is protected and your communications are compliance-ready.

And, with both on-premise or private cloud available as deployment options, service is customizable, security is specifically tailored, and adoption is cost-effective.

Secure enterprise chat can be the difference between a company communicating effectively, or sporadically and without cohesion.  Utilizing it can enhance data archiving, boost compatibility with compliance standards, and protect organizations from legal repercussions and regulatory discipline.  Not using it can open a door to all those outcomes, creating untold headaches for companies and clients.

Improve your business outcomes with secure enterprise communication.  Your employees and your clients will thank you for it.

Why End-to-End Encryption Isn’t Always What You Want: 4 Important Insights

21. August 2020 Posted by HCL Sametime Team

Enterprise companies choosing a web chat platform value software that will protect vital data.  Ensuring secure messaging and the larger security reputation of the organization is not only a goal but a requirement.  And encryption is a fundamental pillar of that security.

But not all encryption is the same. And the differences matter.  Let’s cover some of the encryption basics and explain why end-to-end encryption isn’t always the best option for enterprises.

Here Are Four Insights Worth Knowing When You GShopping for Secure Chat Software

  1. What is end-to-end encryption?

End-to-end has expanded in use due to messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage and is lauded for the closed channel it provides users weary of data breaches. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient of a message are able to read it; the message is encrypted on the sender’s end and can only be accessed when unlocked by a private key on the recipient’s end.

In this way the entire communication is blocked from outside examination, available only to the two parties: the sender and the recipient.

2. The downside of using encryption that is end-to-end

The same reason end-to-end is appealing to individuals — the impossibility of accessing data or messages from the outside — makes it less functional for enterprise companies that have regulatory and auditability requirements.  The same factors that protect perfectly legal and safe messages also protect illegal and illicit material, creating a safe space of sorts for malicious parties who can use end-to-end encryption to escape detection and cause harm.

In effect, the privacy upside of end-to-end benefits everyone, including individuals or groups intent on using that privacy for ill.

3. There are alternatives

Despite the growing awareness and popularity of end-to-end, there are alternative encryption methods that are important for enterprise customers to be aware of.  Just because encryption software isn’t end-to-end doesn’t mean it isn’t safe and protected.  In fact, many enterprise companies are in industries which lean on non-end-to-end encryption due to the regulatory and legal requirements of their business.

Don’t get bogged down in thinking end-to-end is the only encryption method.

4. When non end-to-end makes sense

Any communication tool used by enterprise companies will need encryption software that protects all the chats, files, and videos being exchanged daily, with auditability that allows for compliance and regulatory standards to be met.

End-to-end encryption cannot be audited or easily examined, which can leave companies in the dangerous bind of having some poisonous or questionable exchange inside their network and no good avenue for investigating it.

Financial and government entities specifically are expected to meet numerous regulatory standards that are enforced via audits and intensive data reviews.  Having encryption software that provides both safe messaging and auditability gives companies the best of both worlds.

This is why non-end-to-end encryption makes sense for many enterprise companies — and is food for thought when shopping for secure chat software.

Look to HCL Sametime for a chat and meetings platform that is totally safe, but allows for auditability.

Is Your Head in the Cloud(s)? Choosing Between Private Cloud or on-Premises for Deploying Enterprise Meetings Solutions

12. August 2020 Posted by HCL Sametime Team

The decision about whether to deploy on a private cloud or on-premise storage is important  choosing the wrong enterprise deployment can have a dramatic impact on your entire business. Getting it right for your company starts with knowing the basic strengths and weaknesses of each option, and how they’d fit or not within the goals of the organization. You need to become familiar with the difference between private cloud and on-premise storage right now.

 What is private cloud storage?

Cloud storage relies on external servers to store data, connect employees, and generally keep all manner of business operations flowing smoothly. These servers are managed by a thirdparty company which assumes the responsibility of maintaining service, installing new updates and software, and troubleshooting. The private cloud is popular for several clear reasons.

Advantages of a private cloud for enterprise meetings and chat solutions

  • Reduces IT responsibility. The cloud frees up a company’s IT staff by placing the burden of managing the data storage on the third party hired to do so. This allows employees to prioritize other work and avoid admin headaches entirely.
  • It’s cost-effective. Companies are able to save money by not having to buy, install and maintain expensive equipment to house all the data. The cloud also gives companies added budget flexibility by offering plan options to fit their storage needs. That way you only pay for what you need and are not locked into a payment system that doesn’t make sense.
  • It’s scalable. Cloud-based storage is built to scale, meaning companies can easily upgrade how much storage they use based on their needs. This gives fastgrowing businesses the ability to quickly scale up (automatically) to handle increased usage and velocity.
  • Regular data backups. The cloud does data backups quickly, ensuring that any temporary tech issue in the office won’t endanger data that’s kept on the cloud.

What is on-premise storage?

On-premise storage boasts its own set of distinct capabilities. On-premise utilizes physical infrastructure that stores and manages data at the company’s physical site, which does require investment in the installation and upkeep of the equipment, but it means that you control, literally, where your data is stored.

You will need dedicated admin staff to operate the equipment and fix it when something goes wrong, or you could create a future with a dozen employees packed inside the server room tugging randomly on wires and staring hopelessly at a user manual.

Advantages of on-premise for secure enterprise chat and meetings solutions

  • You control the uptime or downtime. Having on-site servers gives companies an internal network that guarantees service no matter what else is happening in the area. An interrupted internet connection could slow other companies to a standstill, a problem on-premise storage avoids.
  • Stronger security. Your data is not sitting in server room with a bunch of other servers in a building nowhere near your organization. Cloud storage can be more vulnerable to data breaches, whereas on-premise data is buttressed by superior security protocols. Having the servers on-site means access to them is more restricted, and if there is sensitive data being stored some companies want to control the securityOrganizations and industries overseen by strict data-privacy laws or require governmental regulation often prefer an on-premises deployment.
  • More control over server hardware. Increased access to the servers means the ability to upgrade and modify the server hardware to better fit the company’s needs. A company with a talented and experienced IT team could use this to their advantage by simply responding themselves to any needs they have, ending any reliance on outside tech support.

Sometimes the best kind of choice is not having to choose

The decision on how to store your chat and meetings data can spark some serious debate about what to prioritize. Data security or scalability? Convenience or guaranteed service? Consistent backup of data or persistent control over the hardware? End-to-end encryption or auditability?

What if the secure enterprise meetings and persistent chat solution you wanted was available on both? Sametime from HCL can be deployed on a secure private cloud or on-premises — wherever it makes sense for the business. It’s simple to install, with a fast deployment.

Are Work Video and Chat Platforms Safe? How Virtual Meetings Can Become Very Real Headaches.

16. Juli 2020 Posted by HCL Sametime Team

Virtual workspaces are now a common feature in business communication. Having a secure video and chat platform is vital, as it gives teams the power to connect and innovate within a safe digital environment. But how safe are these tools, and how important is that safety to the employees and overall operations of enterprise companies?

Why the experience platform is necessary

Having a smart and flexible platform that supports all enterprise communications is absolutely vital — and it needs to be safe from any security risk.  Modern enterprises must offer their teams the tools to communicate anywhere using any device, and if the Coronavirus pandemic has spotlighted one business trend that will certainly continue, it’s the dramatic increase in online meetings and the digital office.

There’s no going back to a workplace that doesn’t prominently include video conferences, virtual staff meetings, remote check-ins, and web-based chat.  The benefits of modern enterprise software are many and important.  The question, then, isn’t whether video and chat tools should be optimized, it’s how to do it safely and effectively.

The risks are real if your communication isn’t secure

The recent security breaches on meetings prove that virtual meetings can go dramatically wrong if not properly protected.  Personal information can be shared, your meetings could be hijacked from outside, sensitive data could be stolen, and time, money, and your organization’s reputation can be squandered. Such disruptions have plagued a spectrum of virtual spaces including online classes, local government meetings, and religious gatherings, garnering an FBI warning and putting the question of security in the spotlight in the process.

In the case of Zoom, numerous cases of “Zoombombing” exposed holes in both the company’s software and their messaging around privacy protection, putting a dent in what has been a narrative of amazing growth for the company.

For enterprise companies, the scope of risk extends beyond individual privacy and impacts the level of service they can provide to the industries they serve, which demand a premium level of transparency and compliance.  There simply isn’t room for error when it comes to choosing a video and chat platform.

Data security solutions

Video and chat capabilities are safe when they are safeguarded properly. It starts with the right encryption for your enterprise needs.  Many chat and communication services use end-to-end encryption, which can only be read by the sender and recipient of a message, making it popular with organizations that don’t need to record, archive, or audit their meetings and chat data.

For enterprise companies, including those dealing with financial and government clients, there is the additional requirement of maintaining compliance with security standards and regulations.  The ability to archive all electronic communications, including chat apps and video messaging, isn’t some minor security feature. It’s required by law.  Failure to do so can mean hefty fines, legal consequences, and irreparable reputational damage.

This added layer of responsibility makes the archiving and auditability prowess of any enterprise encryption very important.  You want a secure video and chat platform that comes bundled with the kind of encryption that meets not just your security needs but the regulatory needs of the industries you serve.

So, are video meetings and chats safe?  Yes, they are, as long as you choose a communication tool that has rock-solid security — and auditability.  Join a secure, industry-compliant meeting today. Join Sametime

HCL Digital Solutions Academy

3. Juni 2020 Posted by Luis Guirigay

We are thrilled to announce an ambitious new program called the HCL Digital Solutions Academy that seeks to empower our community of partners, developers, admins, customers and other key stakeholders to learn and understand everything our products are capable of. How to stay current about each new release, make the most of new capabilities, learn best practices, understand how they can power new opportunities and solve challenges, and, ultimately, transform business.

We will be creating and sharing content in a regular cadence — through webinars, demos, articles, social media, events, and email — under the umbrella of the HCL Digital Solutions Academy. Our software helps people get real work done. We help people solve challenges, fix disparate systems, automate the everyday, and realize the “power of the possible.” At HCL we truly extend our relationship beyond the contract, and help people achieve the business outcomes they are looking to us to help them do.

We are building out a rich roster of content created and delivered by multiple teams within HCL — development, support, product management, technical advisors, etc. — but we don’t want to stop there. We want to invite you, HCL Masters, Business Partners, and customers to help us develop this program and grow our content catalog. Please send us a note with feedback or ideas for content you would like to see or help deliver as part of the HCL Digital Solutions AcademyThe content we will be sharing with you includes webinars, workshops (hands-on labs), technical videos (10-15 minutes each), podcasts, and learning journeys.

And before you ask, the answer is yes! We want to bring back technical certification! Certification is very close to my heart, just like it is for many of you. In fact, I strongly believe that being a certified developer and administrator in our HCL Digital Solutions portfolio was key and opened many doors for me, first when I was a customer and then when I became a consultant and Business Partner. Our plan will allow us to eventually bring certification and badges, but we first need to close the gap with content. The more content we produce the easier it will be to create learning journeys and certification roadmaps.

Digital Solutions Academy is an international, multilingual program and we will be rolling it out across the globe — sessions are in English unless noted otherwise. Here are the first set of upcoming events and experiences — organized by region and date — that you need to sign up for right now. We are excited to have you join us.

Why You Need to Upgrade to Sametime v11 Right Now

4. April 2020 Posted by HCL Sametime Team

You may be on an unsupported version (8.0.x, 8.5.x customers, we are looking at you!) or wish to simplify the deployment (get rid of Db2 and WebSphere). To make all this super-simple, here are the top three reasons to upgrade:

Picture

Sametime 8.x is no longer supported. To be on the latest and greatest Sametime version, Sametime v11 should be your new friend. It is HCL-branded, has no more IBM dependencies (no Db2, no WebSphere) and fully supports 64-bit operating systems — both Windows and Linux (including Domino). Sametime v11 is embedded in Notes v11 and comes with a lot of UX modernization, simplified installation of servers and clients, and now supported on Docker.
It also offers persistent chat, with the ability to receive messages immediately and on all clients (desktop, mobile, and browser) concurrently, as well as third-party conferencing integration with products such as Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting, and Jitsi. You’ll also get a brand-new web client: Built from scratch on React, the new Sametime web client is modern, lightweight, and fast. Currently, it is designed to work on its own and will include in the soon-to-come thin client. This new web client is consistent with the new HCL product design guidelines, so the UX is simple and uncluttered.

Getting started
Two words: Deploy and migrate.

Deploy: Deploy HCL Sametime v11 as described in the Sametime v11 installation and administration documentation (provided with the product release), re-create environment settings, and any custom policies and configuration for the Sametime Community Server.

Use the Sametime v11 client builds provided with Sametime v11 GA, to upgrade users from Sametime 8.x and any older clients to the new V11 release.

Migrate: Due to the core architecture and design changes in Sametime v11 compared to Sametime 8.x release, it is not possible to perform an in-place upgrade of the Sametime servers. Instead, deploy Sametime v11 separately so that users can continue working in Sametime 8.x while you manage policies and recreate environment settings and product customizations. When the Sametime v11 deployment is ready for production use, you can redirect clients to Sametime v11 and shut down the Sametime 8.x deployment.

For best results, use different computers to host Sametime v11 servers. Deploying separate computers prevents port conflicts, reduces resource requirements on each server, and allows you to maintain the Sametime 8.x servers as backups in case you encounter problems with the Sametime v11 deployment.

Planning your migration
Now it would be an excellent time to look at any updates required for operating systems. Update your hardware if needed, look at the two different directory types (LDAP and Domino) – move to either one if required for your environment (you should consider buddy list management and migration).

We recommend that you follow some best practices for migration. You should build the new system in parallel if you created the new system as part of the same community, block via firewall 1516 to prevent confusion as to which server users are on for testing of new feature set. Point test users to the new system and make sure that vpuserinfo.nsf is replicating, or plan for a copy at a cutover time. Once satisfied that V11 is working for the test users, do a DNS flip so that existing users silently move over to the new system at the next login. If something goes awry – use DNS to flip back.

Contact list migration:  Sametime v8.x and v9.x Contact Lists stored in the vpuserinfo.nsf database which can be replicated or moved to the new Sametime v11 environment thereby ensuring users will not have to rebuild their existing Contact Lists on Sametime v11.

Policy migration:  If desired, you’ll be able to use policy.user.xml files from v8.x and v9.x deployments and copy your current policies to the new v11 environment policy XML file.

Making the switch
When switching over to the Sametime v11 deployment for production, change the Sametime DNS settings to direct users to the new deployment.

The switch from the Sametime 8.x deployment to the Sametime v11 deployment should be done in sequence so that all users are accessing only the preferred deployment at any time. Once you have removed the DNS setting for the Sametime 8.x deployment, you should immediately set it in the Sametime v11 deployment to minimize down-time for users.
In the Sametime v11 deployment, change the DNS setting to the value used by Sametime 8.x so that users will automatically access the new implementation.

Shut down the Sametime 8.x servers; do not recycle the equipment until you are satisfied that the Sametime v11 deployment is functioning correctly.

What’s coming in 2020?
We have exciting things on the roadmap for 2020. One such item is seamless integration with HCL Connections to allow users to invite “guests” outside the organization to participate in the secure collaboration. We are also considering enhanced federation between Sametime communities as well as enhanced integration with Connections, Verse, and more. There’s a brand-new HCL Sametime Meetings offering (including audio-video) planned for mid-2020. We are also looking into community-based chat channels, file sharing and more, via seamless integration with Connections along with ongoing modernization of user experience.

Recent Launches and a Look to the Future

18. Dezember 2019 Posted by Richard Jefts

We in Digital Solutions marketing are new to HCL. And we have a lot to do. The recent logo and branding re-imagining and the launch that we broadcast live from Tokyo is the beginning of a new era.

From a marketing perspective, we wanted to signal a change, put a flag in the ground to say, “Forget what you knew about these products; it’s time to look forward.” And after only a few weeks, we delivered an entirely new brand with new logos and creative under HCL Digital Solutions. We leaned heavily into a new color pallet, and completely redesigned all product logos. It was a chance, not one often given to marketers, to remake something that is already well-known and revered.

Our lead designer on the project was Liam McCormick, and I think he describes the design system best when he tells us, ”We went in search of something in HCL’s history that we could build upon, and what we found was what we considered the design DNA in the original HCL logo — it is shear angle of 24.24 degrees. We took that angle and built a grid system, and (take or leave a few hundred iterations) the new logo family was born from this original structure which can always be traced back to the mother brand of HCL.” And trust me, we could not have had better talent working on this redesign (Liam also helped design the Cisco WebEx and Vodafone logos).

But that wasn’t all we needed to do. We needed to capitalize on the momentum started with the launch of HCL Domino v10 to the rest of the portfolio. The first out of the gate on October 7, 2019, was HCL Digital Experience 9.5, a proven digital experience management platform and the very first product release for the newly acquired products. The new release provided many significant business and technical benefits, including unsurpassed standardization and flexibility, accelerated time-to-market, liberated experience delivery, and a lower total cost of ownership. And hundreds of clients and valuable business partners joined us in-person in Raleigh, North Carolina, and Milan to celebrate the launch.

Then, just a mere five months after the acquisition the major moment had arrived — on December 4th, 2019, HCL announced the general availability (GA) for HCL Domino v11, HCL Sametime v11, and HCL Connections v6.5. It was a milestone moment for the business, and I want to give a round of applause to the development teams that made it happen, many of which didn’t even have access to the code until post-acquisition in July. They worked tirelessly to reinvent the products and deliver on our commitments to our customers and business partners around the world. But it was the excitement that surrounded the launch that made me burst with joy, and our willingness to do something different that led to unforeseen impact.

“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different.” —Coco Chanel

Too often teams throw around words like “different” or “amazing,” but not acknowledging what we were able to accomplish with this truly “different” type of launch would be a misstep on my part as a leader. We knew we couldn’t go to a market like IBM — we aren’t that type of company, and frankly, it was time for a change. So, I tasked my team with thinking outside of the box for this launch.

And think outside of the box they did. They came to me with the idea of running a “Netflix-style” launch in which we broadcast the keynotes “Live from Tokyo” and then deliver 35+ pieces of new content ranging from thought leadership pieces to technical deep dives all at once in a “binge-able” format. I was dubious of course, but if there ever was a time to try it — now was that time.

After months of planning, we all got onto planes and flew to Tokyo for our big day. On December 4, 2019, at 9 AM ET (11 PM locally) we went live to the globe for the announcement of HCL Domino v11 and HCL Connections 6.5. And the impact was immediate: Thousands upon thousands of customers and partners tuned in live all over the world, and over 50+ business partners held concurrent viewing parties to celebrate in 20+ countries. The world map looked like a lit-up Christmas tree!

And it wasn’t just the marketing team that delivered impact in such a short timeframe. The product management and development teams made significant technical advancements for these products. We announced:

HCL Domino v11 builds on our mission: Apps that run your business.

  • Domino apps go mobile: HCL Nomad makes your existing apps available on Apple iPhone and iPad, Android and Chrome OS tablets with minimal effort
  • Domino apps get low-code development: HCL Domino Volt provides a new low-code development paradigm to build new Domino apps 60-70% faster and makes it easy to develop powerful new secure applications without any specialized skills rapidly
  • Domino apps integrate and synchronize: HCL Domino v11 is the most open version of the platform yet, with active directory synching to simplify integration with Microsoft Office 365 and enable enterprises to more fully leverage Domino with other tools and applications across their business

HCL Connections 6.5 has powerful new features to drive adoption and builds a foundation for future releases:

  • Bring your community with you. Connections Sidebar, an always-on dashboard connects your users to Connections from anywhere in your IT environment
  • Grow your communities faster with Connections Touchpoint, an onboarding wizard that connects new employees to the communities and content they need
  • Do more with Kudos Activities Plus — rapid, agile project management built for every employee

HCL Sametime v11 delivers secure conversations across every device:

  • Sametime has a new, intuitive user experience that works the way your users do
  • Built with the latest tech — now supported on Docker with the Sametime proxy running on Tomcat
  • Lower TCO than ever, with a simplified architecture and easier administration

Suffice it to say, this launch was one for the record books, but it is only the springboard with which we will start a new decade. And if you were to ask me what I felt like this moment meant for us, I’d say it’s providing the foundation for real innovation on the platform. Which brings me to where are we going.

Where We’re Going
Our transition to HCL has meant moving not just a suite of products but also people and teams. If there’s one question that the leadership team gets asked the most by our customers and partners, it’s, “Are you going to invest in the products?”
It’s a straightforward question, and there’s a straightforward answer to it: Yes. I, for one, am incredibly excited and humbled by the amount being invested into the teams developing these products, the marketing and sales engine that drive them, and into the teams solely dedicated to pushing the bounds of what’s possible on our platforms. With that, here are a few of the essential ways we are investing — deeply — in our teams and technology:

  • We are hiring hundreds upon hundreds of new developers around the world dedicated to HCL Domino, Sametime, Connections, and Digital Experience
  • We are substantially increasing our global marketing investment for brand building, awareness, and lead generation for our portfolio
  • We are focusing on innovation and the “art of the possible” by naming Jason Gary, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for HCL Digital Solutions, to lead R&D and push the bounds of what these products can do
  • And finally, we are further investing in our people like the Domino & Sametime product management team

At HCL, our motto is “Relationship Beyond the Contract.” And we mean it. My commitment to you is that we will listen to you more and be bolder in our plans. We don’t have the luxury or the crutch of working for a software behemoth anymore, but we also don’t have the red tape to stop us from trying new things. Our marketing will be different — I assure you.
But more than anything, know that this is only the beginning, and I am so excited about where we are headed. It’s time for all of us to usher in a new decade at a new company for these legendary products.

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year,

HCL Domino: Software for the Next Decade and Beyond

18. Dezember 2019 Posted by Andy Bossley

It’s not often in one’s career that you get tapped to take over marketing for a legendary portfolio of products. A portfolio with a history so astounding that even just one of its products, HCL Domino, single-handedly invented some of the essential IT technologies still used today. You see, HCL Domino was a NoSQL database before NoSQL was ubiquitous. It was a Rapid Application Development (RAD) platform before RAD was even a thing, and it was and still is adored and used by millions of people globally.

True to anything built to last, HCL Domino certainly experienced its fair share of ups-and-downs over the years. However, it’s still as essential as ever even after just celebrating its 30th launch anniversary earlier this month.

Domino’s Origin Story

1989 was a great year. It was a time of political upheaval, the Brandenburg Gate finally opened paving the way for German reunification, it was time for the arts, Tim Burton’s Batman premiered, and George Michael’s Faith won Album of the Year at the Grammy’s. It was a time for world-changing technology to take center stage.

Lotus Notes Release 1 Gold Build compiled on November 27, 1989. While the launch itself wasn’t until a few days later December 7, it was the birthday for Domino and Notes. But that was just the beginning.

After 6 short years, and immense success, Lotus Development Corporation, the original development company for Lotus Notes, was acquired by IBM for USD 3.5 billion in what IBM’s largest acquisition in its history would be. And this transformative software would transform the tech giant. With the close of the acquisition in 1995, Lotus Development became a new business unit at IBM. It was the very start of the IBM Software Group. That’s right — the acquisition of Lotus was the spark that made IBM a software-focused business, a precursor to the business unit that would create IBM Watson and IBM Cloud.

But as with most large companies, IBM’s priorities shifted, product updates stalled, and the once vibrant community so aptly called “Team Yellow” left on its own in many ways. It came to a head in October 2017 when HCL Technologies announced an IP partnership with IBM Collaboration Solutions to take on development for Domino to deliver the first product update users would have seen in years. On October 10, 2018 Domino v10 released. To say it reinvigorated the platform would be an understatement. People around the world rolled out the yellow carpets to celebrate this monumental moment. And the success was noticed. On December 7, 2018, 29 years to the day after Lotus Notes Release 1 was compiled, HCL Technologies announced an intent to purchase Domino (and SametimeConnectionsDigital Experience) and several other valuable, yet underserved products. The groundwork and path to a new decade were taking shape.

Where We Are Today

On July 1, 2019, the acquisition closed, and these legendary products found new life at HCL Software. But starting at a new company has its starts and stops. We had to build a new website, set up core systems, look back at our pricing and licensing models, consider technical debt in the products, and take a hard look at where we wanted to take the products in the future. It was a lot — but the HCL teams are ready to tackle every challenge. We are going to reinvigorate the Domino brand yet again. And, as we hope you realize, this is — still — only the beginning. We are happy to be on this journey with you. Read about our recent Live from Tokyo event and see just how we are building momentum.

To the next decade and beyond,

Andy Bossley
Head of Marketing, HCL Digital Solutions

Update on HCL Acquisition of IBM Collaboration Portfolio

16. Juli 2019 Posted by Richard Jefts

HCL is pleased to have completed the acquisition of IBM’s Collaboration offerings, fulfilling a key step in building a robust Digital Solutions portfolio.  We are excited about the future. Our goal is to provide our customers with a better-connected business by providing integration, personalization, and openness. By doing so, we will better connect the elements of your business, and help you harness the power of your business outcomes, data and people for a richer Digital Enterprise. You can read the press release here.

In the weeks ahead, HCL will share our vision for the Digital Solutions portfolio, and the four product pillars – Domino, Connections, Digital Experience and Sametime. Achieving that vision requires continued technology decisions and adjustments to align the portfolio strategy.

At HCL, we know cloud, and on-premises, are both important delivery options for our customers today, and they each remain pillars of our foundation for the future.   While the IBM approach to delivering the Collaboration portfolio via IBM SoftLayer has many great elements, the HCL vision calls for a roadmap that delivers increased flexibility, ability to integrate across multiple cloud services, and an ongoing product velocity and innovation.

By taking a modern approach, HCL can deliver results and business outcomes that are critical to your organization – that can scale to meet our customers’ demands as your businesses evolve. Consequently, we’d like to expand upon the way our customers can enjoy our Digital Solutions by providing our customers with your choice of the cloud:

  • HCL Cloud – An agnostic SaaS platform that can leverage best in class Platform as a Service (PaaS) offerings while creating an open, flexible service that integrates with industry-leading technologies.
  • Private Cloud – Continuing with our commitment to on-premises, HCL will optimize its deployment strategy to reduce customers’ total cost of ownership and better enable adoption of our latest and greatest software releases via continuous delivery. Specifically, for Connections, Sametime, and Domino deployed for both mail and applications.
  • Partner-led Cloud – Our business partners are masters of deployment, support, and enablement of the Connections Collaboration portfolio.  By enabling them to deploy, provision, and support their own cloud local to you, our customers will have new opportunities to leverage a cloud deployment while keeping their data close and seeking geo and industry-specific certifications that matter to their businesses, specifically, for Connections, Sametime and Domino.

This has implications for our existing cloud customers. As is documented at the End of Marketing/End of Service announcement on HCL.comeffective immediately, HCL will no longer sell new subscriptions to Connections Cloud and Domino Apps on Cloud (DAC) services. Accordingly, the services will end on July 16, 2020.

Naturally, existing customers may purchase additional seats as needed to remain compliant with their license agreements for the remainder of the period of service.

  • The Connections Cloud offerings include SmartCloud Notes & Verse, Connections, Engagement Center, Docs, and Sametime.
  • HCL will continue to maintain the current Connections Cloud environment to the standards to which you have contracted until that end of service date.  There will be no further enhancements made during this period, with the exception of critical fixes and security updates.

 For the Domino portfolio, specifically:

Based on our analysis of the market, mail will continue to be a core capability of the Domino platform for the foreseeable future. However, to drive greater innovation and velocity across all deployment options, HCL has no plans to provide a like for like replacement for Smart Cloud Notes or Verse on Cloud. Instead, clients will be invited to transition to their own private cloud, or partner-led cloud solution using the latest release of Domino and Verse on-premises.

In summary:
HCL is excited about the future of the Digital Solutions portfolio for both on-premises and cloud. In the coming weeks and months, you will learn more about our vision and strategy, which will position us to greater product velocity and innovation.

We are bringing you this message today because we want to be transparent and open with our customers, HCL Masters and business partners.  We plan to provide you with advice on appropriate migration strategies to the new HCLapproach we’ve just discussed or back to an on-premises deployment.

HCL has a wealth of experience in outsourcing, partnering and services led solutions where we work with our clients to ensure least disruptive outcomes as they wish to transition from their use of an IBM Cloud offering to our modern HCL stack.  We are confident that this investment in our future will magnify the success of our customers.

At HCL, we value your business, and we know you will have questions. We want to hear from you, so please reach out to us or contact your HCL sales representative with your questions.

#domino forever – Domino gehört jetzt HCL

2. Juli 2019 Posted by Gerda Marx
