Ed Brill äußert ein paar – noch mit Vorsicht zu genießende – Visionen, wie Notes-Client-Updates in Zukunft aussehen könnten:
The second is a change in approach to the next Notes/Domino feature release, coming in 2012. One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we get is that, even as easy as it is to upgrade Domino, upgrading Notes at the desktop is the place where companies spend lots of time, money and effort on testing, planning, and rollout. Rather than make the next feature release an architectural upgrade, we are focused on delivering the new features as a "feature pack" atop the existing 8.5.x architecture.
Updates könnten also über die vorhandenen Mechanismen innerhalb der aktuell installierten Notes 8.5 Expeditor-Plattform ausgerollt werden, ohne dass ein “großes” Setup der ganzen Anwendung notwendig ist. Das klingt zumindest für mich sehr interessant, ist doch der Client-Rollout der Punkt, an dem Updates durchaus mal hängenbleiben.
Nebenbei würde das auch eine Frage beantworten, die ich gelegentlich gestellt bekomme: Lohnt es sich, jetzt auf 8.5 zu gehen oder warten wir bis zur nächsten Version? Aber diese Frage stellt sich ja grundsätzlich immer, wenn man mit Soft- oder Hardware zu tun hat.
