Why Domino Is Not “Alcatraz,” My Continued Kitchen Saga, and Why I Want Your Opinion

24. Januar 2022 Posted by Henry Bestritsky

If you haven’t done so, please read my first blog in a series about low-code called, “I Remodeled My Kitchen, and I Joined HCL. (One of These Things Was a Bad Decision.)” to see how Domino relates to me and my decision to get a new kitchen.  Yes, this time , I was going to write about the Ford Pinto and how it relates to Outsystems (read previous blog), but something happened during the last two weeks that I had to write about. And, frankly, I need your advice.

We had waited for four months for the final two appliances for our new kitchen — a coffee machine and a dishwasher. When we called for an update from the company, we were told that shipment was delayed until February (the global supply-chain issues discriminate against everyone). So, we canceled the order and decided to keep the appliances we had — ones we’d had for years and were high-end when we first got them. We called a technician to see if someone could inspect them to make sure they were still in good working order, and upon inspection, everything turned out to be in perfectly good order. We were told they needed a bit of regular TLC and that they would last forever because they were designed and built to last.  The kitchen still looks great, and we saved thousands of dollars.

The combination of the old and the new made me think about how the parallels could be drawn between my kitchen and HCL Domino. Just like my older appliances, Domino was built to last, has been rock-solid from the beginning, and when it’s integrated with more modern technologies, it produces an IT solution with amazing results — that is far less risky than a whole “rip and replace” — with an overall lower total cost.

As I research Domino competitors such as Mendix and Outsystems, one thing becomes very clear.  They are not, in fact, a “full kitchen” solution. They are merely a “single appliance.”

Those companies are basically one-trick ponies with one product, while a company like HCL has dozens of products that can be integrated together to build an amazing “kitchen” that’s exactly to your specifications.  This means that companies like Outsystems and Mendix need to rely on third-party products over which they have no control, which makes them inherently insecure, and we all, unfortunately, know what can happen in that scenario.

For example,  Outsystems is a 20-year-old company that decided to leverage the Apache Cordova plugin framework to support its core technology. This is a direct quote from their website: “Since our applications are built using Cordova, you can either use one of their many available plugins or build your own.” The problem is that today Cordova is pretty much going into retirement and is fundamentally risky, and by its plugin nature is susceptible to hacking.  For example, it was found out in 2020 that Android applications developed via Cordova are vulnerable to illegal configuration alterations.

In short, Outsystems uses an antiquated plugin framework that is inherently insecure, which brings me back to HCL Domino and HCL Volt MX both owned by HCL and both have rock-solid security.

Volt MX which is not based on Apache Cordova — is HCL’s multi-experience low-code platform that is high up on the Gartner Magic Quadrant and directly competes with Mendix and Outsystems.

Imagine having tighter integration between Volt MX and the legendary Domino, so you can easily create mobile and progressive web apps (or even wearables or kiosk experiences) that connect to your essential core back-end business apps and workflows.

Imagine quickly and effectively modernizing and further extending your existing Domino apps by allowing your organization to create apps of the future on any device with Volt MX — which leverages all modern technologies — while still being able to rely on the security, governance, and workflow of Domino.

As I brought this up to my colleagues, some of them wanted to put me in front of a firing squad, screaming heresy! Yes, we have a lot of “yellow tree huggers,” as I call them, and we should.  Their reasoning is that we have invested a ton into the product in the last few years, and a heck of a lot more is coming.  I don’t disagree in the least, but, let’s face it, thanks to Domino’s previous owner, there are quite a few companies out there that still view Domino as if it were an aging prison like Alcatraz: stuck in the past and if you try to escape, you will have more than a bad day!

I see Domino has the critical power behind a composable, modern “kitchen” with the addition of some key, amazing “appliances” from HCL’s extensive product line to really elevate your game and get your business “cooking.”

This powerful combination would create a key competitive advantage.  More importantly, I want to excite any IT decisionmakers who may have given up on Domino, or are still on the fence, and show them the bright Domino future that we all know exists.

Well, that is exactly what HCL is able to do.  Check out how Domino forms convert to Volt MX forms and how Domino data can be accessed and surfaced (as can any other data source)We are escaping Alcatraz!

Tighter Integration Between Volt MX and Domino

All of this leads me to my humble request from you.  Do you think that Domino and Volt MX is a good idea?  Please answer the LinkedIn Poll question below and please, please, please put something into the post’s comment.  As you probably know, you can see the poll metrics in real-time.

What do you think about using Volt MX, HCL’s Gartner Quadrant multi-experience low-code platform to modernize Domino applications?

Thank You!

DOMI 12.0.1 FEATURES: DOMINO ONLINE MEETING INTEGRATION

Q: Can I integrate MS Teams and Zoom into Notes 12.0.1 calendar at the same time?

A: Yes, however when hosting a meeting you will need to decide which meeting platform you want to use for that meeting.

Q: Are other online meetings such as Teamviewer, RingCentral, or Google Meet be integrated in DOMI?
A: DOMI is open-source. You can add support for more vendors here.

Q: Regarding DOMI, do you need a new token for each meeting?

A: No, the token only needs to be obtained once. Based on the platform used, it expires 90 days after the last time it was used.

Q: Will DOMI be included in the new release version’s repository, or do we need to have separate exe for it?

A: Customers with Notes 11.0.1 need to apply a mail template modification. Starting with Notes 12.0.1 those improvements are already part of the mail template shipping with the product.

Q: Is there any plan to extend DOMI to also be used in Verse on-premises and Traveler?

A: Yes, it is on the roadmap for Verse Web and expected to be delivered next year.

Q: Is DOMI a user self-configuration only, or is a global configuration for a specific meeting service possible?

A: The meeting services can be configured (enabled/disabled) by the administrator.

PROJECT RESTYLE

Q: Is “Project Restyle” available for all users?

A: Not yet, but if you like it, please vote for it here.

Q: Does the restyler work for Domino apps developed in early versions? e.g. v7, v8, v9?

A: Yes, the main purpose is to quickly update the look and feel of applications that were developed in previous versions. It even works for apps developed in V3.

Q: If you restyle a database, is this compatible with older versions of HCL Domino?

A: Yes, the design that is applied is using standard technologies that are compatible with any supported version of Domino.

SECURITY AND BACKUP

Q: Does Domino 12 have multifactor authentication?

A: Yes, Domino 12 supports two factor authentication. TOTP is the supported standard. Read here for more details.

Q: For security, does Notes client support 2-factor / multi-factor authentication?

A: The Notes ID file itself is already a two-factor authentication. (You need to have the ID file and know the password.) 2FA (TOTP) is available in Domino for web applications, and we are working on TOTP 2FA support for Notes clients. Vote for this idea for Notes client.

Q: We are currently testing domino 12.0.1 for MFA. We are using the Authy App as the authenticator to authorize web login. Will you have any HCL web authenticator apps available in near future?

A: Since we are using TOTP based on RFC6238 there is no need for an HCL branded 2FA app. Any existing app which supports this standard will work.

Q: Are there options for two-factor authentication using Phone/SMS code?

A: You can get SMS 2FA support from business partners like Cyone.

Q: In previous versions, the way to install SSL licenses was done through OpenSSL and KYRTOOL. Is the way to apply SSL keys still the same in v12 version?

A: SSL certs is now much easier with the new Certificate Manager that is built into Domino. See this article for details.

A: Major operating systems and platforms are supported for client, server, mobile and browser. You have the full freedom of choice!

Q: I use Enterprise Integrator v11, which is not compatible with Domino v12. How can I leverage the new v12 features (i.e., Nomad Web) while also running the critical HEI piece we use for many of our applications?

A: We have just released a new version of Enterprise Integrator 12.0.1. Note that it is not part of your Domino license but is included in Domino Volt.

Q: Do you plan to add Bootstrap 5 support for Xpages?

A: Yes, vote for this idea to be notified on updates

Q: Is it possible to only show field values in the properties box to managers and designers and not to every user? Hiding the design is possible, but it also makes debugging more complicated.

A: We agree on this enhancement. Please vote for this idea.

Q: Is there an update for Domino Designer?

A: Please add your ideas for improvement here.

Q: Is there a community edition of Domino Designer v12 to try it out?

A: There is no longer a community edition. For a trial license please contact your HCL sales representative or use our Nomad sandbox for testing.

Why You Need to Be on the Latest Version of Domino (v12.0.1)

15. Dezember 2021 Posted by HCL Domino Team

This has been a big year for Domino! In June of 2021 we released v12, which includes mobile- and web-ready app capabilities, a low-code citizen development app builder, and cloud-native deployment options in addition to our on-prem install. We are continuously working to modernize this time-tested and proven platform, and we’re excited to announce the latest version – 12.0.1.

With Domino’s new improvements, and more to come, there are three areas where Domino really shines and are the reasons why Domino continues to power 40% of the Fortune 500 and large enterprise businesses around the world.

>> Watch this webinar to learn more about the latest release and the following three key values that Domino delivers better than anyone else:

  • Low Total Cost of Ownership: Real cost savings come from the fact that Domino is an all-in-one solution with everything built-in: app-building capabilities, messaging, server, database, directory, and rock-solid security. You don’t have to buy, maintain, or worry about all those separately. Not to mention, migrating core business applications to new platforms can be risky and expensive and yield no net-new value.
  • Secure to the Core: Security is built into the DNA of Domino. Domino keeps information available (no downtime) and safe, while ensuring smooth business operations.
  • A Strong, Future-Proof Roadmap: You need to make sure you are choosing IT infrastructure decisions that make sense for your future roadmap. HCL has committed to supporting your ability to run and deploy where it makes sense for you on a cloud of your choice — so you can evolve your application and process investment at the pace you want.

What’s New in v12.0.1

The latest version is now available on the HCL Software License & Download Portal  and is the foundation for what’s to come with Domino in 2022.

HCL Notes Client

Domino Online Meeting Integration

The Notes Client 12.0.1 provides native integration of online meeting platforms like Zoom, Webex, GoToMeeting, Teams and, of courseSametime MeetingsFrom within the Notes calendar, users can more easily schedule online meetings using their preferred platform without having to install a plug-in.

Improved Workspace Design with HighResolution Icons

The new Notes client allows to use high resolution icons for your databases, which makes a big difference to the look and feel of your workspace! No need to stick to small and oldstyle 32×32 pixel database icons anymore.

We have already updated our standard templates with new icons, will you update yours?

This new workspace design is based on a number of ideas, e.g. this one, thank you for submitting this request, Fredrik

Advanced Properties Box
You asked for itand we are delivering an all-new and resizable document property box:

Thanks to panagenda, the new advanced properties box allows to search for field names or values, it also provides a requested ability to copy to clipboard or export to a CSV file:

But wait, there’s more! We also managed to deliver a few more features, such as:

Furthermore, we are introducing support for Microsoft Windows 11 and Apple MacOS Monterey.

HCL Domino Designer

We have already provided a 64Bit Notes client in betaand based on your request (thanks, Yunus), we are now providing a 64-bit Domino Designer client.

Domino Designer v12.0.1 provides the ability to include highquality icons for rendering and enables developers to optimize the database full text index by defining which fields to be included in the index  a feature that many customers were requesting (this idea was originally posted by Tom).

Another key feature is a new method that allows you to sort search resultsa feature based on this idea from Christopher. The new QueryResultProcessor enables to build views that display data from multiple databases (thanks to Jimmy for this idea).

Several smaller issues in our bootstrap implementation were also fixed in this release.

HCL Domino Server

With Domino Server 12.0.1, we are introducing support for Windows Server 2022 (as requested here by Kunio) as well as a number of enhancements. Highlights include:

In addition to all the features announced above, we’ve also included:

This v12.0.1 release includes 227 bug fixes, more than in versions 11.0.1 and 10.0.1 combinedFor details see our fix list database.

When planning to upgrade your DAOS enabled servers, please review the knowledge base article KB0095401 and request the hotfix available for SPR # SSARC8LEQB if applicable to your environment.

Happy Holidays from the Domino team!

I Remodeled My Kitchen and I Joined HCL. (One of These Things Was a Bad Decision.)

9. Dezember 2021 Posted by Henry Bestritsky

My wife and I wanted a new kitchen — even though our ten-year-old appliances were high-end Subzero and Wolf that we acquired when we bought the house last year. So, we paid a ton of money for the most modern and popular replacement appliances that money could buy, and we could control by apps on our phones — and, of course, are Alexa connected.  Two months later, our fridge broke, and when the repairman (after waiting three weeks) came over, he said with a smile, “this kind of stuff does not break with the older ones.” I also smiled because the day before, I had joined HCL and was going to be able to work again on one of the classic technologies of the world — Domino. Another kind of “old stuff” that just doesn’t break.

I want to be clear, I’m not a nostalgic person when it comes to tech (I do get nostalgic, however, when it comes to people, and over the years I’ve worked with some of the smartest there are.  If you think you are a ten, surround yourself by twelves, I always say.) To demonstrate this, I first worked for many years at Binary Tree, which was a top partner to IBM and helped organizations adopt Lotus (which would later become Domino) for automating their business processes. Once Domino stopped being innovated and invested in, I moved over to Microsoft when Office 365 came on the scene. I probably helped migrate millions of people away from Domino and onto Office 365. After getting many people for years to adopt Domino, I then made a living literally getting people off it. This wasn’t how it should have had to be!

Frankly, for years, I have tried to find a replacement for Lotus/Domino.  I was like Indiana Jones looking for the Holy Grail.  As time and technology progressed, the words, “low code” and “no code” started popping up onto the scene from companies such as Mendix and Outsystems.  Other players more on the no-code side also appeared, such as Airtable and Formstack.  IMHO, I think that Airtable is an amazing tool and wish that our previous Domino owner could have created exactly the same thing.

Even though Airtable is an uber spreadsheet on steroids, it is still not Domino.  Frankly, I have concluded that nothing is.  Nothing compares to what Domino can do. That is why companies are still running it, producing products, helping people, and making money.  Ok, it sounds like I am pushing Domino, well, maybe a little.  How could I not?  Don’t you smile if someone asks you what your first car was?

This is the first installment in a new blog series, called “Henry’s Hot Seat. The Low-Code Lowdown,” which will delve into the low-code/no-code market and the products that support that market — providing cost-benefit analyses, risk analyses, and opinions on security, market trends, and the massive digital transformation companies are experiencing due to the pandemic. And, I will show you why Domino still dominates after 30+ years.

And I will talk about the low-code companies that are out there, such as Mendix and Outsystems. And I’m going to ask you tough (but basic) questions like: If you think that Domino locks you in and constrains you … why the heck would you want to go with those guys?  I’ll put that question another way in my next blog: “You Want to Migrate from Domino to Outsystems? I Have a Ford Pinto to Sell You (Or, for you Millennials, Let’s Talk About Solarwinds).”

Modernizing Domino Applications

6. Dezember 2021 Posted by Gary Rowan

For over 25 years I have built, administered, and re-engineered thousands of Domino applications. We are now engaging customers and providing guidance on how to modernize these business applications, extending their investment in proven technologies, and doing so in a manner that will not break budgets.

Why Modernize?

Modernizing applications goes hand in hand with the digital transformation happening in our world today. It provides for greater agility, mobile access, a modern user experience, and a future-ready platform. You must be thinking “how can it be possible for all of those to lead to a reduction in cost?” Not only will modernization do just that, but there is a compelling opportunity to increase the ROI and agility for your applications as well. Modernization extends the lifespan of applications while taking advantage of new technical frameworks, modern programming languages/technology stacks, and infrastructure platforms. Add in the capabilities of the cloud, and we can accomplish all of this while at the same time providing increased efficiency, agility and scalability for future enhancements to applications. And do not forget about the user experience. I have seen firsthand the value modernized applications bring by providing tools that give valuable time back so more can be done with our day. When done correctly, application modernization will take this to a whole new level by adding more flexibility, more functionality and more time for all users.

One of the most important things I have learned is that modernization does not equate to rewriting your applications from scratch. Existing applications contain valuable data, business rules, processes and back-end system integration that must in some form remain in place when deciding on your path to application modernization. These applications are investments that provide underlying cost savings and finely tuned efficiencies that are not easily measured or seen – until you try to replicate that on another platform. Unfortunately, many companies invest down the modernization path only to find it much more difficult and expensive than they initially thought. Taking advantage of what is currently in place is crucial in keeping costs down and minimizing disruptions in your journey to modernization. Having to recreate or losing mission critical features, efficiencies, and already proven application functions must be avoided.

One last, especially important item…. Mobility, Mobility, Mobility! This is at the forefront of modernization. Having the ability to use applications anywhere and from any device is crucial. This is necessary, as being able to get even the simplest tasks done anytime, anywhere, is one of if not the biggest benefit to modernization. It is difficult to rationalize or recommend any application modernization plan without it.

Modernization Expertise: What I have learned

Almost all of my customers have solicited estimates for their modernization aspirations. Some have been guided towards moving to a new platform, or re-writing and re-building apps. In every case they are shocked and dismayed at how large and expensive an effort it turns out to be — and often the effort doesn’t even replicate or improve their existing functionality. Many of these estimates include multi-year engagements where business needs will inevitably change during the modernization process. Still, many proceed down this path, often at significant expense, and only then do they become open to the value of simply modernizing their existing investment to bring it into the modern era. Along with the obvious development costs, IT leaders are tasked with taking into consideration the inevitable ongoing administration and application upkeep. Any modernization solution needs to alleviate all of this and be affordable in both short term and long term. Oh, and by the way, just to make it even more difficult, being able to connect to and integrate with disparate apps and web services from different vendors on different platforms is essential.

After thinking all of this through I asked myself, “how can we take a rapid design environment and rock-solid run-time like Notes and Domino and turn those strengths into modern, browser-based and mobile solutions for our customers?” As detailed in this previous blog entry, the economic benefits and ROI of Domino are well-documented. However, with all the tools and technologies in the market over the last few years, customers often become overwhelmed in selecting and adopting an entirely new platform, let alone having to recreate years of business logic, processes and data. What many do not realize is that when properly used, the modern Domino server already has these tools that can provide for this new modern environment.

Personally, my focus is always to provide solutions that are quick, impactful, and at the lowest cost possible. I take into consideration the impact on the users, as familiarity and processes need to be accounted for as well. Any modernization offering must enable customers to modernize in a swift, cost-effective way that provides minimal impact on users and IT staff. The main requirements of app modernization we produced were:

  • Modern, browser-based user experience
  • Mobile ready: access anytime, anywhere, and from any device
  • Flexible deployment (on premises or customers cloud of choice)
  • Future ready and scalable
  • Low code options to easily deploy new business functionality
  • Ability to integrate existing data
  • Ease of onboarding
  • High user acceptance, low user impact
  • Ability to integrate via APIs with other applications and web services

Modernization: What we have built

We leveraged all those attributes and created a platform that will modernize Domino applications. That platform is called Compass. With Compass we are now able to provide a modernization path for our customers that takes advantage of existing design, and brings applications into the modern browser and mobile. And modernizing with Compass has proven to be 70%-80% less in time and cost when comparing with other platforms. Compass takes existing Domino applications and:

  • Modernizes the UI into both web and mobile experiences (see below)
  • Eliminates the need for the Notes client
  • Redesigns your application layout and flow, if desired
  • Moves the Domino environment to the cloud of your choice or on-premises
  • Provides a rapid, low-cost modernization
  • Integrate HCL Domino Volt and HCL Volt MX applications in the Compass Workspace

Guiding your organization

App Modernization is an essential element of the digital transformation. There are so many different routes one can choose. But do not get overwhelmed. We as service providers must assist our customers in choosing what is the most cost-effective way forward with app modernization. Keeping in mind all the above, and trying to take advantage of existing processes will make this path easier to navigate. As you and your teams work through this process, I hope that sharing my experiences and insight will assist in what you can look for in taking this step in the most cost-effective way.

Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss your environment and where I can help.

How to Create Application Icons in Domino 12.0.1

23. November 2021 Posted by Mary Elizabeth Miller

In the Notes and Domino release of version 12.0.1 (coming soon!), we have updated the ability to display 64 x 64 px application icons in the workspace. You will have the ability to upload icon files that are larger than that, but on workspace they will display as 64 x 64 px. If you have older application icons that were created with the 32 x 32px icon specification that existed prior to this release, then those will still display at the smaller size. The Notes Domino design and development teams are working to update existing template icons for HCL provided templates; you will also see these icons updated in the v12.0.1 release.

If you have seen some of the new template icons, you might be thinking, “How can I update my application icons to look like that?” Follow along with the tutorial below or watch the webinar replay on how to update your Notes application icons. The default application icons are available to download from the forum here.

For applications using HCL-provided template such as mail, calendar, rooms and resources, and directory, etc., these will automatically update when the user opens these applications. For the custom applications that you have created for your clients or company, these icon files will need to be updated and deployed in Domino Designer by the owner of the application.

Examples of HCL provided template icons:

Guide to Creating Application Icons

The following documentation explains how to design new application icons that match the style of the HCL Notes app icons but are tailored to the purpose of your application.

There are two different approaches you can take, review the following documentation, and decide which approach is best for you.

Option 1

Use one of the provided icons and upload to Domino Designer. In this package, there are some default app icons that you can use out of the box and there is no design needed. These icons map to some of the templates that are provided with Domino such as Teamroom, Discussion, and Document Library. For these, all you will need to do is download the icon you would like from the folder titled “Option 1 – default Icons,” and upload it to designer.

Available Default Icons:

Option 2

Note: For this option you will need to have access to an image-editing tool, such as:

  • Microsoft Paint: Installed on Windows Machine
  • GIMP: A free software available for Windows and Mac
  • Adobe Photoshop: I would suggest to only use this one if you already have it installed on your machine

You can create an application icon using a foreground and background image provided in this package.

Within this package there are many foreground and background images to select from. Select the ones that best match the intention of the application. For example, if the application is focused on scheduling and uses calendar views, then you might want to choose one of the foreground icons that represents events or time. While for the background color you might want to choose a color that is also represented in the color of the application.

Example Application Icons:

GIMP: Step by step

The following instructions describe how to create these icons in GIMP 2.10. Other image editing software would have similar steps.

Step 1

In the zip file provided you will see a folder titled Option 2 – Foreground and Background > Background Images. Within this folder select the background image that you would like to use. Then select a foreground image from the folder Option 2 – Foreground and Background > Foreground Images.

Step 2

Create a new document and set the image size to 64 x 64px.

Step 3

Drag or import the background image from the downloaded zip file. The background image was created specifically for a 64 x 64px background. Be sure that the background image is centered on the artboard.

Step 4

Follow the same steps for placing the foreground image. Be sure that the order of the layers has the foreground image on top of the background image.

Step 5

If the background of the artboard is not transparent, then delete the white background that was created by default.

Step 6

Export the image as a PNG file and upload the image to the Application Icon section in Domino Designer.

What’s New in HCL Domino Volt

5. Oktober 2021 Posted by Martin Lechleider

The latest release of Domino Volt, v1.0.4, is available for customers to download from the HCL license and download portal and to try out in the Domino Volt Sandbox. New features include the data grid and rich text items on the palette, in-place editing of text in design, a new overall design, and a new Link design client and SAP adapter.

Watch our latest webinar showing how these features enable marketing business users to create their own apps — Be an IT Hero: Empower Your Marketing Teams with Domino Volt.

The release delivers on the promise of “building apps … not just forms.”  The data grid in combination with app pages and navigation make it a much easier to address many application scenarios.  Think of the new release as allowing you to build apps which include forms – vs – building forms that look like apps. Many apps can be created in half the time and in many cases without writing a line of code. On top of that, they’ll have improved function and user experience.

Here’s a rundown of the new features and you can view the features in action here.

The data grid is the star of the release. It gives you a way to build views of form data on app pages or forms that can be used for all kinds of scenarios such as:

  • Display the contents of a catalog for purposes of making a selection
  • Show a task list or a summary of “my requests”
  • Provide a dashboard summary which you can filter and sort
  • Create a list which allows you to conveniently select and update the underlying records

Example of the Data Grid used for catalog selection and my requests

Rich-text data input lets you build forms that allow users to enter and format text, tables and links. They can also paste content directly from sources like Microsoft Word.

Adding a rich text field in design mode

Also, Domino data services can fetch rich text from Domino and put it the new rich text data field.

In-place text editing frees designers from the properties panel and makes it easier to add and format text content in-place in their apps.

  In-place editing of text

The new design provides a modern, streamlined experience, with the tabs that were on top moved to the left to be more intuitive.

New modern design

An updated Link client provides a simpler experience for the Domino Volt admin to build and manage integrations for Domino Volt designers. Plus, the addition of a new SAP adapter makes it possible to set up integration with SAP BAPIs.

Check out the Domino Volt Showroom for new apps that you can download and import into the Domino Volt Sandbox to see what the new release can do.

Group 3 Language Translations for Notes and Domino 11.0.1

Good news for many of our customers: HCL Notes 11.0.1 is now available in more languages.

You asked for it (DOMINO-I-831 and NTS-I-842) – In addition to the 16 languages the Notes client was already providing, we are delivering the following language translations:

  • Danish
  • Finnish
  • Norwegian
  • Catalan
  • Hebrew
  • Hungarian
  • Slovenian
  • Thai
  • Turkish

Install kits for the HCL Notes Standard and Basic Client V11.0.1 in those languages can be found at our License and Download Portal under the Notes/Domino version 11.0.1.

Of course, we are also providing the Multilingual User Interface (MUI) kit for those languages, as well as the Install Shield Tuner files to customize your installation.

Group 3 language translations for the Notes Client v12 are being worked on.

Level up for our Domino Rest API

In June, we started the beta program for our new Domino Rest API. Now in August, it’s time for the next iteration. Shifting gears to Beta 2 will introduce several improvements customers were asking for:

  • ODATA support was added for reading/writing from/to Domino, which is especially of interest for e.g., Salesforce customers who want to store data in Domino
  • A new Domino server add-in task is provided to start/stop/reload the Domino Rest APIs and show its status from the Domino server console
  • An installer is now allowing to install the Domino Rest APIs on a Domino Linux server. Previously only a docker container was provided

For more details, about the new features please refer to the changelog of this project.

Please note: The Domino Rest APIs are still in beta — the first eGA release is scheduled to be shipping with Domino v12.0.1 later this year. Customers interested in joining the beta program can find the required files available for download at our License and Download Portal

HCL Traveler 12.0 updated with Fix Pack 1

Fix Pack 1 for HCL Traveler 12.0 is also available for download at our License and Download Portal. This update is especially recommended for customers using Android devices due to a bug fix that is addressing an error connecting to Firebird Cloud Messaging servers via proxy. (Ref: KB0092130 ). It also fixes a bug that caused Traveler to crash (Ref. KB0091495 ) and addresses two other issues that customers have reported.

For more details on HCL Traveler 12.0.0 Fix Pack 1 please refer to this technote.

Housekeeping for Notes/Domino v10.0.1

For customers running on HCL Domino 10.0.1 we have shipped Fix Pack 7 in mid-July. This fix pack is a collection of 136 low-risk, high-impact fixes to help customers safely avoid known issues, e.g., resolving several UI issues for Notes Clients on MacOS Big Sur and on Windows 10.

It also provides 25 fixes for the Domino server, resolves 33 problems that customers have reported with iNotes, and is addressing about 20 issues around development and programmability.

HCL strongly recommends that customers running Notes/Domino 10.0.1 apply this Fix Pack since it addresses a small percentage of defects that impact the broadest set of customers.

For details on the individual SPR’s addressed in this fix pack please refer to this article or check the Fix List database.

New features for Domino AppDev pack

Version 1.0.9 of the Domino AppDev pack was released end of June is providing Node.js and Java developers with new features such as:

  • Ability to export individual design elements and other non-data documents into DXL
  • Retrieve the list of files in a given directory on the Domino server
  • Work with Access Control Lists and Roles in Domino databases, allowing to get / update / replace entries in the ACL.

Furthermore, the user interface improvements for the Identity and Access Management (IAM) server have been updated and is providing tools to leverage the new Domino 12 Certificate Store for Proton and domino-db clients.

More information can be found in the What’s New section of the Domino AppDev Pack.

What’s Next?

In the next few weeks, we have lined up the following releases and updates for you:

HCL Domino C-API Toolkit v12.0 is going to be released end of August, so developers, partners and third-party vendors can upgrade their products to leverage the latest compiler and take benefit from new capabilities of Domino 12

HCL Verse 2.2.0 will be providing new features like an updated Sametime integration as requested here, and the ability to restore documents from an archive. Furthermore, this release is adding support for Connections 6.5 and 7, provides an enhanced preferences page to manage your availability and other calendar settings and provides updates to freetime search and is improving the PWA capabilities.

We are also looking forward starting the first beta release of HCL Domino 12.0.1 later this month and have a new release of HCL Nomad 1.0.1 waiting for you in early September. However, details for those two are subject of a future blog post, so please stay tuned for more!

Announcing the Domino REST API Beta Program

11. Juni 2021 Posted by Barry Rosen

Today, we’re announcing the start of the beta program for our new Domino REST API, formerly known as “Project Keep.” This is the latest addition to our ongoing Domino Early Access Program.

The Domino REST API will introduce hundreds of new APIs that aperture to information on Domino — further extending access to your Domino data. It’s a modern take on the REST API for opening Domino access to a world of standards — and API-first developers.

What is it?

Domino REST API is a new feature that runs alongside the server and allows you to expose your Domino data in the form of standardized Open-APIbased methods securely and easily. Using a browser-based admin UI, application owners can define which data will be made available for view or update on a REST API. It extends the Domino principles of reader/author document access definitions into the world of Internet protocols.

It also includes Swagger UI which allows the visualization and interaction with APIs without having any of the actual implementation logic in place. The APIs are automatically generated from an OpenAPI (formerly Swagger) specification with visual documentation, making it easier to later implement the back-end code.

What is special about the new Domino REST APIs?

  • Secureby default, with fine granular controls per form, field and user basis
  • Implements latest open standards
  • HTTP/2-ready, for server-to-server or client-to-server communication
  • API-first design with full interactive documentation
  • Low barrier to entry as it runs on a Domino server and/or your Notes client
  • Admin UI and Postman samplesincluded
  • State-of-the-art JWT access token integrated with your existing IdP infrastructure

What can be accessed via the Domino REST APIs?

You can access content like views, documents, and fields, as well as database design, agents, and ACL settings. And, of course, featuring DQL queries to quickly access the data you are looking for.

Built-in declarative security ensures the API will only allow access to fields the caller is authorized to see or update. This can effectively prevent computed fields to be overwritten and limits participants in a workflow to update their fields only.

How to participate

The Domino REST API is now available as a prepacked ready-to-use Docker container to all current Domino customers. The download can be found in the “Domino Early Access program” category on Flexnet. Please visit documentation here to learn more and to set up your test environment.

You are invited to join our Domino Early Access program forum here, to provide your valuable feedback and suggestions on the Domino REST API beta program.

Please note, the Beta program will run from June 7 until the REST APIs are shipped with the next Domino release, post v12.

Making a Smooth Upgrade to HCL Notes v12

3. Juni 2021 Posted by Christoph Adler

The big day is coming soon! HCL Notes / Domino v12 will be launched  globally on June 7th (it’s already available for download on HCL FlexNet since May 27th). For those customers planning to upgrade, we have some great news. Whether you have been keeping pace with the rollouts of new HCL Notes client versions, or are WAY behind, there is a path for a seamless and smooth transition to v12. The MarvelClient Upgrade solution empowers organizations to optimize their HCL Notes client management and standardize all client versions with a consistent configuration during the automated upgrade process.

Common Upgrade Challenges

What we have heard consistently from organizations around the world is that they want to reduce the complexity of their HCL Notes client installations and lessen the administration support tasks required. It is an ongoing challenge for IT support groups to keep pace with the upgrade cycles provided by their vendors. The following list is a showcase of some challenges that organizations face during an upgrade process:

  • Creation of Notes Client Install Package (with standard configurations)
  • Upgrade Package Deployment for Remote Users (with or without VPN)
  • Installation / Upgrade Process Execution Trigger for Automation
  • Migration of Notes Data Folder
  • Automated Upgrades for Different Deployment Models (Laptops, Desktops, Citrix, VDI, different OS versions, etc.)

The MarvelClient Upgrade solution handles all those requirements and more. The centralized tracking and reporting environment allows administrators to monitor the client deployments for all employees. And if any modifications are made through user error, they will be rectified and reset to the standard, supported settings on the next restart of the HCL Notes client. These automated, self-healing functions enable any organization to ensure a consistent environment for their users and reduce the number of IT support calls from HCL Notes client installation issues.

In addition, the MarvelClient Upgrade automates the entire process. This makes it easy to perform regular upgrades in the future as new software versions become available. If your organization is preparing to upgrade HCL Notes/Domino in the near future, please access this best practices list to avoid common project pitfalls.

Review of HCL Notes / Domino v12
